Sons / Sons Of Champlin - Sons
Sealed 1969 Original. “The Sons Of Champlin's Sprawling, Double-LP Debut Album, Loosen Up Naturally, Had Its Launch Marred By The Discovery Of An Obscenity In The Cover Art That Resulted In A Mass Recall And Ruined Its Commercial Chances. They Were Also Beset By Internal Strife, And When The Time Came To Release Their Second Album Only Six Months Later, They Chose To De-Emphasize The Primacy Of Lead Singer And Main Songwriter Bill Champlin By Shortening Their Name To "The Sons" And Also Giving That Name To The Record. But Their Music Remained Essentially The Same, A Mixture Of Champlin's Thoughtful Lyrics And Gritty Singing With Terry Haggerty's Inventive Lead Guitar Work And The Two-Man Horn Section Of Tim Caine And Geoffrey Palmer. As Usual, There Was Almost Too Much Going On In The Arrangements, Which Gave The Songs Touches Of Folk, Rock, Jazz, And Psychedelia, Often In The Same Song, As A Couple Of The Tunes Extended Beyond Ten Minutes In Length, Changing Tempo And Feel In Mid-Flight. Clearly, This Was A Band That Was Accustomed To Using Its Songs As Frameworks For Free Playing In Concert, But The Bandmembers Still Hadn't Quite Figured Out How That Worked In The Studio, And Their Arguments About Musical Direction Could Be Heard In The Music Itself. Champlin Remained The Strongest Presence In The Band, But His Songs (All Of Which Were Credited To The Sons Communally) Took A Backseat To The Group That Was Playing Them Any Way It Wanted To. The Results Could Be Exhilarating, If In A Somewhat Anarchic Way. The 2002 CD Reissue On Acadia Adds The Group's First Single And Debut Recording, Only Released As A Promotional Disc, "Jesus Is Coming," Which Appeared For The 1968 Christmas Season And Made Some People Mistake The Sons For A Christian Group.” - William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide...more

Iggy Pop & James Williamson - Kill City
Sealed 1977 Limited Edition Original Pressed On Green Vinyl. Shrink Wrap Has Custom Hype Sticker. Vinyl Scan Is Of An Open Copy We Previously Had In Stock. “To Say Iggy Pop Had Hit Bottom In 1975 Is An Understatement; After The Final Collapse Of The Stooges, Iggy Sank Deep Into Drug Addiction And Depression, And He Eventually Checked Himself Into A Mental Hospital In A Desperate Effort To Get Himself Clean And Functional Again. At The Same Time, James Williamson, His Guitarist And Writing Partner In The Last Edition Of The Stooges, Still Believed Their Collaboration Had Some Life In It, And He Talked His Way Into Jimmy Webb's Home Studio To Record Demos In Hopes Of Scoring A Record Deal. Iggy Checked Out Of The Hospital For A Weekend To Cut Vocal Tracks, And While The Demos They Made Were Quite Good, No Record Companies Were Willing To Take A Chance On Them. The Tapes Sat Unnoticed Until 1977, When Bomp! Records Issued The 1975 Demos Under The Title Kill City After Iggy Launched A Comeback With The David Bowie-Produced The Idiot. Kill City Never Hits As Hard As The Manic Roar Of The Stooges' Raw Power, But The Songs Are Very Good, And The Album's More Measured Approach Suits The Dark, Honest Tone Of The Material. The Sense Of Defeat That Runs Through "Sell Your Love," "I Got Nothin'," And "No Sense Of Crime" Was Doubtless A Mirror Of Iggy's State Of Mind, But He Expressed His Agony With Blunt Eloquence, And His Sneering Rejection Of The Hollywood Street Scene In "Lucky Monkeys" Is All The More Cutting Coming From A Man Who Had Lived Through The Worst Of It. And In The Title Song, Iggy Expressed His State Of Mind And Sense Of Purpose With A Fierce Clarity: "If I Have To Die Here, First I'm Going To Make Some Noise."” – Mark Deming, AMG...more

Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine - Let It Loose: World Premier Weekend
Sealed 1987 Promo Only 2LP. Archival Copy And The First Time We Have Ever Had This In Stock. “After Years Of Under-The-Radar Album Releases And A Regional Following At Best, Miami Sound Machine Rocketed To Mainstream Recognition With One Song, "Conga." That One Song Changed Everything For The Group, Especially Lead Singer Gloria Estefan, Who Suddenly Became A Pop Star By Default. So When It Came Time To Release The Follow-Up To Primitive Love, The Album That Had Spun Off "Conga," The Miami Sound Machine Billing Was Changed To The More Marketable "Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine" (And An Album Later, Just Gloria Estefan). Thankfully, The Change Of Billing Is The Biggest Change From Primitive Love To Let It Loose. The Unabashed Dance-Pop Remains, Most Importantly The Token Romantic Ballads And Dance Songs (The Often Goofy Album Filler Remains Too, Of Course). If You Really Want To Analyze The Albums Relative To One Another, You'll Find That Let It Loose Essentially Is A Rewrite Of Primitive Love -- Almost Song For Song, In Fact, With A Very Catchy Pop Song Opening The Album, Followed By The Title Track, A Romantic Ballad, Some Side-Closing Filler, A Second-Side-Opening Dance Song, Some Filler, Another Token Ballad, And Then Some More Filler To Close Out The Album. But This Is Precisely Why Let It Loose Is Such A Great Little Album. You See, Primitive Love Had Been A Mid-'80s Dance-Pop Gem As Far As Mid-'80s Dance-Pop Goes, And Let It Loose Is A Marked Improvement. For Instance, The Slight Misfire Of "Body To Body" Is Now The Bull's-Eye Pop Of "Betcha Say That," The Pretty-Good Ballad "Words Get In The Way" Is Now The Really Good "Can't Stay Away From You," And So On. The One Exception Is "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," Which Isn't Quite On A Par With "Conga," But Then Again, That's Raising The Bar Awfully High. In Any Event, Listeners Ate Up Every Spun-Off Single, All Five Of Them, Which Was More Than Enough To Drive The Album Well Into The Billboard 200 Top Ten. Its Appeal And Popularity Aside, Let It Loose Is All The More Special Because It Marks The End Of Miami Sound Machine In Name As Well As Sound." Jason Birchmeier, AMG....more
