Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die
Factory Sealed 1970 Heavy Duty Gatefold Original With Rare Plastic "Traffic Is Back" Hype Sticker On The Shrink Wrap. Shrink Wrap Has Separated Along The Top Seam. We Believe This Is A Black & Orange First Label, But Can't Swear To It. "At Only 22 Years Old, Steve Winwood Sat Down In Early 1970 To Fulfill A Contractual Commitment By Making His First Solo Album, On Which He Intended To Play All The Instruments Himself. The Record Got As Far As One Backing Track Produced By Guy Stevens, "Stranger To Himself," Before Winwood Called His Erstwhile Partner From Traffic, Jim Capaldi, In To Help Out. The Two Completed A Second Track, "Every Mother's Son," Then, With Winwood And Island Records Chief Chris Blackwell Moving To The Production Chores, Brought In A Third Traffic Member, Chris Wood, To Work On The Sessions. Thus, Traffic, Dead And Buried For More Than A Year, Was Reborn. The Band's New Approach Was Closer To What It Perhaps Should Have Been Back In 1967, Basically A Showcase For Winwood's Voice And Instrumental Work, With Wood Adding Reed Parts And Capaldi Drumming And Occasionally Singing Harmony Vocals. If The Original Traffic Bowed To The Perceived Commercial Necessity Of Crafting Hit Singles, The New Traffic Was More Interested In Stretching Out. Heretofore, No Studio Recording Had Run Longer Than The Five-And-A-Half Minutes Of "Dear Mr. Fantasy," But Four Of The Six Selections On John Barleycorn Must Die Exceeded Six Minutes. Winwood And Company Used The Time To Play Extended Instrumental Variations On Compelling Folk- And Jazz-Derived Riffs. Five Of The Six Songs Had Lyrics, And Their Tone Of Disaffection Was Typical Of Earlier Capaldi Sentiments. But The Vocal Sections Of The Songs Merely Served As Excuses For Winwood To Exercise His Expressive Voice As Punctuation To The Extended Instrumental Sections. As Such, John Barleycorn Must Die Moved Beyond The Jamming That Had Characterized Some Of Traffic's 1968 Work To Approach The Emerging Field Of Jazz-Rock. And That Helped The Band To Achieve Its Commercial Potential; This Became Traffic's First Gold Album." William Ruhlmann, AMG....more

Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine - Let It Loose: World Premier Weekend
Sealed 1987 Promo Only 2LP. Archival Copy And The First Time We Have Ever Had This In Stock. “After Years Of Under-The-Radar Album Releases And A Regional Following At Best, Miami Sound Machine Rocketed To Mainstream Recognition With One Song, "Conga." That One Song Changed Everything For The Group, Especially Lead Singer Gloria Estefan, Who Suddenly Became A Pop Star By Default. So When It Came Time To Release The Follow-Up To Primitive Love, The Album That Had Spun Off "Conga," The Miami Sound Machine Billing Was Changed To The More Marketable "Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine" (And An Album Later, Just Gloria Estefan). Thankfully, The Change Of Billing Is The Biggest Change From Primitive Love To Let It Loose. The Unabashed Dance-Pop Remains, Most Importantly The Token Romantic Ballads And Dance Songs (The Often Goofy Album Filler Remains Too, Of Course). If You Really Want To Analyze The Albums Relative To One Another, You'll Find That Let It Loose Essentially Is A Rewrite Of Primitive Love -- Almost Song For Song, In Fact, With A Very Catchy Pop Song Opening The Album, Followed By The Title Track, A Romantic Ballad, Some Side-Closing Filler, A Second-Side-Opening Dance Song, Some Filler, Another Token Ballad, And Then Some More Filler To Close Out The Album. But This Is Precisely Why Let It Loose Is Such A Great Little Album. You See, Primitive Love Had Been A Mid-'80s Dance-Pop Gem As Far As Mid-'80s Dance-Pop Goes, And Let It Loose Is A Marked Improvement. For Instance, The Slight Misfire Of "Body To Body" Is Now The Bull's-Eye Pop Of "Betcha Say That," The Pretty-Good Ballad "Words Get In The Way" Is Now The Really Good "Can't Stay Away From You," And So On. The One Exception Is "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," Which Isn't Quite On A Par With "Conga," But Then Again, That's Raising The Bar Awfully High. In Any Event, Listeners Ate Up Every Spun-Off Single, All Five Of Them, Which Was More Than Enough To Drive The Album Well Into The Billboard 200 Top Ten. Its Appeal And Popularity Aside, Let It Loose Is All The More Special Because It Marks The End Of Miami Sound Machine In Name As Well As Sound." Jason Birchmeier, AMG....more

Isaak, Chris - Heart Shaped World
Sealed 1989 Original With Custom Inner Sleeve. Features His Big Hit "Wicked Game." Cut Out Hole. First Sealed Copy We Have Had In Stock. “When Filmmaker David Lynch Backed A Disquieting Scene In Blue Velvet With Roy Orbison's "In Dreams," He Demonstrated The Eerie Atmosphere Behind Its Pre-'60s Innocence. Orbison Disciple Chris Isaak Played Those Qualities To The Hilt In His Shimmering, Spare "Wicked Game," So It Was No Surprise When Lynch Included The Ballad In Wild At Heart. What Was Surprising, Given The Fact That It Sounded Like Nothing Else On Pop Radio In 1990, Was That "Wicked Game" Became A Breakout Top Ten Hit, Pushing Isaak's Accompanying Album Heart Shaped World To Platinum Status. Of Course, There's More Than That One Moody Masterpiece Of A Single To Recommend Heart Shaped World. Isaak Faithfully Recreates His Influences With Production That's Infinitely Cleaner Than Sun Rock & Roll, Drawing More On Its Form Than Its Attitude, But He's Particularly Suited To The Sort Of Orbison/Presley-Style Balladry That Brought Him A Mass Audience. His Rich, Sobbing Croon Is Simply A Gorgeous Instrument, Whether He's In A Sonorous Baritone Or Quavering Falsetto. And He Uses That Instrument To Tremendous Effect Here, Coming Across As A Brooding Romantic With A Broken Heart And Swoon-Inducing Style. Of Itself, Heart Shaped World Is A Pretty Effective Mood Piece, Showcasing Isaak Doing A Whole Lot Of What He Does Best. He Does Attempt A Couple Of Rockers, But They Never Really Rock -- Much Like Orbison, It's Clear That Ballads Are His True Forte, And Given The Spirit Isaak Wants To Channel, The Numbers Feel Much Too Tame. But Aside From That Flaw, The Rest Of Heart Shaped World Is A Supremely Elegant Late-Night Soundtrack, Equally Suited To Steamy Romance Or Solitary Heartache.” Steve Huey, AMG....more

Steppenwolf - Monster
Sealed 1969 Gatefold Original With Song Hype Sticker On The Shrink Wrap. "Steppenwolf's Monster, Their Fourth Studio Album In Less Than Two Years And Fifth Overall By That Time, Remains Their Watermark Album, Especially In Retrospect. The Title Track Alone Is Testimony To The Strength Of The Band And To John Kay's Storytelling Prowess; An Ambitious Piece Of Folk Balladry And Hard Rock, The Message Remains Relevant As It Dispels The Illusion Of "America The Land Of The Free", Beginning With The Genocide Of The American Indian Right Up To The Military Industrial Complex That Has All But Destroyed This Once Promising Country. Musically The Song Is All Over The Place But Never Meandering And By The Coda Of "America, Where Are You Now?!!" The Irony Sets In That A Canadian Refugee From War Torn 1940's Germany Wrote This Candid Observation. Add To The Melee The Powerful Blues Rockers "Power Play" And "Move Over" And The Whimsical Instrumental "Fag" As Well As The Scathing Closer "From Here To There Eventually" And You Have An Amazingly Diverse Musical Statement That Rocks Hard With A Strong Sense Of Melodicism Throughout; And Special Kudos To Guitarist Larry Byrom On This Album, Whose Blistering Solos On This Rival Anything Laid Down By The Considerable Talents Of Original Guitarist Michael Monarch, Which Is Saying A Lot. Steppenwolf Would Never Attain This Height Again And It Remains The Pinnacle Of Their Body Of Work." Willie Hines, AMG....more
