Belle Of Avenue A
Used - LP - RS 6359
Rare 1969 US White Label Promo. VG++/NM-. Some Light Foxing On The Cover. "The Fugs Sounded A Little Weary And Burnt Out On Their Final Studio Album Of The 1960s. The Psychedelic Experimentation And Orchestral Arrangements Of 1968's It Crawled Into My Hand, Honest Were Ditched In Favor Of Basic Rock Or Even, At Times, Acoustic Performances. The Title Track And "Queen Of The Nile" Are Essentially Ed Sanders Solo Cuts, With Acoustic Guitar Accompaniment By Dan Hamburg; "Bum's Song" Is Likewise Pretty Much A Tuli Kupferberg Recording, With Just His Voice And Hamburg's Guitar. The Sexually And Politically Charged Heart Of The Band Continued To Beat On Songs Like "Chicago" (Originally Written For The Soundtrack Of A Yippie Movie About Chicago Police Riots At The 1968 Democratic Convention) And "The Belle Of Avenue A," About A Quickie Between A Hippie And A Truck Driver. But The Production And Adrenaline Levels Are Kind Of Flat. The Country Influence That Was Always Present In Ed Sanders' Singing And Songwriting Started To Really Flower On This Lp, Where His Yodeling Vocal Style -- Which Was Less Than An Acquired Taste -- Prefigured The Country Satire Of His 1969 Debut Solo Album, Sanders' Truckstop. It Was Up To Tuli Kupferberg To Provide The Record's Highlight, The Sincere Ballad "Flower Children"." AMG - Richie Unterberger. more

Fugs (Second Album)
New - LP - ESP 1028
Sealed Original With The Insanely Rare Shield Alternate Artwork. Layout Of The Paste On Back Cover Is Also Different From The Two Black And White Cover Versions. “The Fugs, Retitled The Fugs Second Album For A Later Reissue, Finds Them Sounding More Professional Than On Their Debut, And Still Sounding Very Ahead Of Their Time Lyrically, Expressing Sentiments In Ways That Just Hadn't Been Done Before. Lyrically, Many Of The Tracks On This Album Wouldn't Be Out Of Place On Any Dead Kennedys Record, But Like The Dead Kennedys, The Fugs' Weakness For Crude Humor Puts A Damper On The Whole Affair. Sometimes The Jokes Work ("Dirty Old Man"), Sometimes They Don't ("Mutant Stomp"), But They're Always Entertaining. At Times, Ed Sanders' Nasal Whine And Clichéd Hippie Posturing Can Grow Tiresome ("Frenzy," "Group Grope"), But A Few True Gems Do Manage To Shine Through. "Morning Morning" And "I Want To Know," Which Wouldn't Have Been Out Of Place On The Velvet Underground & Nico, Are True Highlights. Like Reed, The Revolutionary Tag Is Placed On The Fugs For The Sheer Frankness They Used To Deal With The Taboo. But Whereas Reed Dealt With The Dark Sides Of Promiscuity And Drug Use, The Fugs Celebrate It, And Most Times In A Very Exhibitionist Way. Biting Social Commentary, As On "Doin' All Right," Is Articulately Done, And While Being Listenable, Is Not Outstanding In Musical Terms.” Matt Fink, All Music Guide. more

Golden Filth
New - LP - RS 6396
Sealed 1970 Original. “By The Time Of This Recording On June 1, 1968 At The Fillmore East, The Fugs Had Evolved From Their Primitive Beginnings Into A Pretty Full And Tight Rock Band. They'd Also Grown Into A Pretty Large Group, In Fact, With Ten Musicians, Including Two Drummers. However, Most Of The Material Was Initially Recorded Between 1965 And 1966, ESP Era. While Some Listeners Might Be Disappointed By The Absence Of Live Versions Of Highlights From Their Reprise Records, This Release Actually Has More Value Than The Typical Live Album Because It Has Notably Different Arrangements Of Well-Known Songs. On The Fugs' First Recordings In Particular, The Sound And Execution Was Pretty Primitive, And It's Good To Have Full, Together Rock Versions Of Notable Songs Like "Slum Goddess," "Supergirl," "Nothing," "I Couldn't Get High," "Coca-Cola Douche," And "How Sweet I Roamed." The Spoken Intros Haven't Dated As Well, With Sanders' Monologues About Lesbian Dwarfs And Zebra Puke, And Kupferberg Moaning At One Point, "I Want A Titty"; What Was Once A Shocking And Taboo-Breaking Is Now Superfluous To The Music.” - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide more

Layout Of The Back Cover Is Also Different From The Two Black And White Cover Versions. Known As The "Fugs Second Album". "The Fugs, Retitled The Fugs Second Album For A Later Reissue, Finds Them Sounding More Professional Than On Their Debut, And Still Sounding Very Ahead Of Their Time Lyrically, Expressing Sentiments In Ways That Just Hadn't Been Done Before. Biting Social Commentary, As On "Doin' All Right," Is Articulately Done, And While Being Listenable, Is Not Outstanding In Musical Terms. Bonus Tracks, Such As "Carpe Diem," Are Nice Additions, And "Wide Wide River," Which Has A Faux Gospel Feel, Is Appropriate For The Sermonizing The Fugs Do On The Song, As Throughout The Album. Overall, The Fugs Is An Interesting Historical Footnote." AMG - Matt Fink. more
