Born To Be Blue
New - LP - B0030486-01
Sealed 2019 Blue Note Tone Poet reissue. Mastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray and pressed at RTI on 180gm vinyl. Custom hype sticker on shrink. Born To Be Blue is a classic jazz album that was released by the legendary jazz guitarist Grant Green in the year 1962. The album features a set of beautiful and soulful tracks that showcase Green's masterful guitar work and his ability to create engaging melodies that are both relaxing and mesmerizing. The album features a mix of original compositions and covers of classic jazz tunes, all of which are performed with finesse and precision. One of the standout tracks on the album is the title track, "Born To Be Blue", which is a slow and melancholic ballad that features Green's signature guitar tone and delicate improvisation. Other tracks on the album, such as "Somewhere in the Night" and "If I Should Lose You", also showcase Green's immense talent as a guitarist and his ability to communicate emotions through his music. more

Feelin' The Spirit
Audiophile - New - B0033488-01
Sealed 2022 Remastered Reissue For The Blue Note Tone Poet Series. Housed In A Heavy Duty Gatefold Jacket, Recorded By Rudy Van Gelder With The Reissue Supervised By Joe Harley And Cut By Kevin Gray. Pressing Done At RTI On 180gm. "Broadening His Musical Palette, Grant Green Detoured Into A Number Of "Theme" Sessions In 1962 -- The Light Latin Jazz Of The Latin Bit; The Country & Western Standards Of Goin' West; And The Best Of The Bunch, The Old-Time Gospel Album Feelin' The Spirit. For Feelin' The Spirit, Green Takes Five Traditional, Public-Domain African-American Spirituals And Gives Them Convincing Jazz Treatments In A Quartet-Plus-Tambourine Setting. Green's Light Touch And Clear Tone Match Very Well With The Reverent Material, And Pianist Herbie Hancock Is Tremendous In Support, Serving The Needs Of The Music And Nailing The Bright Gospel Style Perfectly. Similarly, Green's Playing Never Gets Too Complicated Or Loses Sight Of The Melodies, Yet He Never Runs Short Of Ideas -- Which Goes To Show That Feelin' The Spirit Is Indeed A Labor Of Love. Opening With A Jaunty "Just A Closer Walk With Thee," Green And Hancock Work Up An Impassioned Gospel Fervor On "Go Down Moses," Which Is Loaded With Soulful, Bluesy Tradeoffs. Yet Overall, The Mood Is Fairly Reflective, With Green's Interpretations Of "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," And "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child" Pointing Up The Suffering And Sorrow Behind These Standards -- With The Implication That Suffering Still Continued Into 1962. That's Not To Say Feelin' The Spirit Is A Depressing Album, Though; It's Simply Infused With The Spirit Of The Blues, Which Is Part Of The Reason These Songs Translate So Surprisingly Well Despite Their Harmonic Simplicity. Green, Hancock, Bassist Butch Warren, And Drummer Billy Higgins Keep The Grooves Flowing Throughout, Making Feelin' The Spirit A Rousingly Successful Experiment." AMG Review By Steve Huey. more

Green Is Beautiful
Used Import - BN 4342
Mint Japanese Pressing With Obi. Recorded In 1970 By Rudy Van Gelder. “The Second Album Of Grant Green's Thorough Jazz-Funk Makeover, Green Is Beautiful Finds The Guitarist Growing More Comfortable With Harder, Funkier R&B Than He Seemed On The Softer-Hued Carryin' On. The Switch From Fender Rhodes Electric Piano Back To The More Traditional Hammond Organ Certainly Helps Give The Session A Little Extra Grit, But It Doesn't Return Green To The Land Of Soul-Jazz By Any Means. Green Is Beautiful Is Still Explicitly Commercial And Accessible To Non-Jazz Audiences, And (Purist Objections Notwithstanding) That's Not Necessarily A Bad Thing. Green's Take On James Brown's "Ain't It Funky Now" Is One Of The Funkiest Items In His Rare-Groove Period; It May Be Chordally Very Simple, But The Groove Is Tight And Percolating, And Green, Tenor Saxophonist Claude Bartee, And Trumpeter Blue Mitchell All Come Up With Hot, Exciting Solos. The Album Also Benefits From Green's Discovery Of Composer And Occasional Organist Earl Neal Creque, Who Contributes Two Bright, Slinky, Horn-Driven Originals: "The Windjammer," Which Became One Of The Signature Tunes Of Green's Late Period, And "Dracula." They Help Give The Album A More Original Voice, And Indicate That Green Was Actively Making Himself At Home In His New Musical Environment.” Steve Huey, AMG. more

Iron City
Used - LP - MR 5120
1977 Reissue. Hint Of Ring Wear, Tiny Mouth Dings & Saw Cut Jacket. "Recorded For Muse Records In 1967 As Grant Green Was On An Extended Recording Hiatus -- It Was His Only Record Between 1965's His Majesty, King Funk, His Only Album For Verve, And 1969's Carryin' On, His Return To Blue Note -- Iron City Actually Captures The Guitarist In Fine Form, Jamming On Six Blues And R&b Numbers With His Longtime Cohorts, Organist Big John Patton And Drummer Ben Dixon. The Trio Members Had Long Ago Perfected Their Interplay, And They Just Cook On Iron City, Working A Hot Groove On Each Song. Even The Slow Blues "Motherless Child" Has A Distinct Swing In Its Backbeat, But Most Of The Album Finds The Trio Tearing Through Uptempo Grooves With A Vengeance. Green's Playing Is A Bit Busier Than Normal And He Solos Far More Often Than Patton, Who Lays Back Through Most Of The Album, Providing Infectious Vamps And Lead Lines. The Two Styles Mesh Perfectly With Dixon's Deft Drumming, Resulting In A Fine, Overlooked Date That Showcases Some Of Green's Hottest, Bluesiest Playing." AMG Review B y Stephen Thomas Erlewine. more

New 2010 45rpm Stereo 180gm HQ Plastic Zip At Top Was Removed But LP/Cover Are New, Unused. Limited Edition #0359/2500 Reissue In Deluxe Gatefold Jacket. Previously Only Released In Japan As Blue Note GXF 3053. During The First Half Of The 1960s, Grant Green Was The House Guitarist At Blue Note. His Single-Note Lines Had The Power Of A Saxophonist, He Displayed His Own Brand Of Soul, And He Was So Versatile That He Was A Perfect Fit With Soulful Organ Combos, Post Bop Groups And All-Star Straight-Ahead Bands, Even Recording Latin Music, Spirituals And A Western-Themed Album. For 1964's Matador, Green Showed A Lot Of Courage, Performing "My Favorite Things" In A Quartet With Mccoy Tyner And Elvin Jones. Any Other Guitarist Would Sound Foolhardy In That Setting, But Green Came Up With His Own Ideas, Creating A Different Spin On John Coltrane's Trademark Song. It Is Proof That On The Guitar, Green Was On The Level Of A Mccoy Tyner And An Elvin Jones On Their Instruments. He Was An Innovator Who Blazed His Own Path, Created Music That Had Never Been Heard Before, And Always Remained Impossible To Pin Down As Playing In Only One Style. Matador, Which Features Grant Green With His Peers, Is One Of His Most Vital And Timeless Recordings. more

Audiophile - LP - MM LT 990
Rare Sealed 2010 Limited "Series" Edition Low Number. 45rpm 2LP 180gm Stereo HQ Reissue In Deluxe Gatefold Jacket. "Solid Is A Companion Piece To The Grant Green Classic Matador, Recorded About A Month Later With The Same Rhythm Section, And Also Not Issued Until 1979. Green Is Once Again Accompanied By The Coltrane Supporting Team Of Pianist McCoy Tyner And Drummer Elvin Jones, Plus Bassist Bob Cranshaw; This Time, However, Green Is Also Joined On The Front Line By James Spaulding On Alto Sax And Joe Henderson On Tenor. Both Saxophonists Really Seem To Light A Fire Under The Proceedings, For In Comparison With The Relatively Subdued Matador, Solid Is A Bright, Hard-Charging Affair. There's A Little Modal Jazz, But Solid's Repertoire Is Chiefly Complex Hard Bop, Full Of Challenging Twists And Turns That The Players Burn Through With Enthusiasm. Green Didn't Tackle This Kind Of Material -- Or Play With This Kind Of Group -- Very Often, And It's A Treat To Hear Him Do So On Both Counts. The Compositions -- Highlighted By Duke Pearson's "Minor League," Henderson's "The Kicker," And A Storming, Ten-Minute Exploration Of George Russell's "Ezz-Thetic" -- Provoke Some Intricate Improvisations From Green, And His Perfectly Controlled Soloing Is An Interesting Contrast With The Passionate Spaulding And Henderson. Tyner And Jones Are Once Again Telepathic In Their Support, Elevating The Whole Package To One Of Green's Strongest Jazz Outings And A Unique Standout In His Catalog." Steve Huey, AMG. more

Street Of Dreams
New - LP - BST 84253
Sealed, Latest Run Of The 2014 Standard Vinyl Reissue With Cutom Blue Note 75 Years Hype Sticker. "Grant Green's Second Session With Organist Larry Young, Street Of Dreams Brings Back Drummer Elvin Jones And Adds Bobby Hutcherson On Vibes For A Mellow, Dreamy Album That Lives Up To Its Title. There Are Only Four Selections, All Standards And All Around Eight To Ten Minutes Long, And The Musicians Approach Them As Extended Mood Pieces, Creating A Marvelously Light, Cool Atmosphere That's Maintained Throughout The Record. Hutcherson Is The Perfect Addition For This Project, Able To Blend In With The Modal Advancement Of The Rest Of The Ensemble While Adding His Clear, Shimmering Tone To The Overall Texture Of The Album. All The Musicians Play With A Delicate Touch That's Quite Distinct From The Modal Soul-jazz On Talkin' About; It's Not So Much Romantic As Thoughtful And Introspective, Floating Along As If Buoyed By Clouds. There Aren't Really Any Fireworks Or Funky Grooves, As The Music Is All Of A Piece, Which Makes It Difficult To Choose The Highlights From French Songwriter Charles Trenet's "I Wish You Love," "Lazy Afternoon," The Title Track, Or "Somewhere In The Night." It's Another Fine Record In A Discography Filled With Them, And Yet Another Underrated Green Session." AMG - Steve Huey. more

The Final Comedown - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Used - LP - BST-84415
1972 Original Terre Haute Pressing. Blue & White Liberty Grooved Label. The First Film Soundtrack Ever Released By Blue Note. Music Composed By Wade Marcus. VG+ Cover With Ring Wear & Corner Rubs. "The Final Comedown Was Blue Note's First Film Soundtrack And A Departure For Both The Label And Grant Green. True, Many Of Green's Sessions From This Period Dipped Into Funk And R&B, But Most Of The Tracks Heard Here Are Pensive Mood Pieces, Conceived As The Backing Tracks To The Blaxploitation Film Of The Same Name. As Can Be Expected, There Are A Handful Of Cuts -- "Past, Present And Future," "Slight Fear And Terror," "Battle Scene" -- Featuring Things Like Staccato Horn Punches, Dramatic Tympani, And Little In The Way Of Instrumental Soloing -- Standard Fare For The Genre. Others, Like The Fantastic Title Track, Showcase Green In A Setting Much More Akin To His Previous Funk Dates (Alive, Etc.). Like Any Film Score, The Final Comedown Shifts Moods As Often As It Revisits Themes, So One Should Expect To Hear A Wide Variety Of Styles Held Together By Only A Few Common Motifs. The Most Puzzling Thing About This Release, Perhaps, Is The Fact That It Was Credited To Green At All. Wade Marcus Composed And Conducted Every Track And At Least A Few Of Them Feature Green In Nothing More Than A Supporting Role. Recommended For Fans Of Blaxploitation Soundtracks And Early-'70s Jazz-Funk." AMG Review By Brandon Burke. more
The Latin Bit
Audiophile - New - B0033312-01
2022 2LP 180gm Remastered Reissue, Part Of The Tone Poet Series. Mastered By Kevin Gray And Manufactured By RTI. "Grant Green, Being Known Mainly As A Soul Jazz Guitarist, Eventually Gravitated Into The Popular Boogaloo Sound. The Latin Bit Is The Natural Bridge To That Next Phase, Though A Bit Premature For Most In 1961-1963, Even Relative To The Subsequent Bossa Nova Craze. Pianist Johnny Acea, Long An Underrated Jazzman, Is The Nucleus Of This Session, Grounding It With Witty Chops, Chordal Comping, And Rhythmic Meat. The Latino Rhythm Section Of Drummer Willie Bobo And Conga Player Carlos "Patato" Valdes Personify Authentic, Seasoned Spice, While At Times The Chekere Sound Of Garvin Masseaux Makes The Soup Too Thick. At Its Collective Best, The Group Presents A Steady, Serene, And Steamy "Besame Mucho" And The Patient, Slow, Slinky, Sultry "Tico Tico." Just A Small Step Below Is A Classy Take On Charlie Parker's "My Little Suede Shoes," A Premier Jazz Bebop (Emphasis) Tune With A Latin Undertow And Green's Tiniest Staccato Phrases, Slightly Marred By The Overbearing Constant Chekere, But Still Classic. "Mama Inez" Ranks High For Its Calypso-infused Happy Feeling And Wry Stop-start Lines. The Straight-ahead Hard Bopper "Brazil" And Lone Soul-jazz Tune, "Blues For Juanita," Display The Single-note Acumen That Made Green's Style Instantly Recognizable. This Date Always Yielded Mixed Results For Staunch Fans Of Green, But It Remains A Credible Effort, Even If Slightly Flawed In Part." AMG Review By Scott Yanow. more
