A Black Box
New - LP - PHS 1
Sealed 1980 UK Original. “Another Emphatic, Powerful And Technically Excellent Production From Peter Hammill. More Rocky Than PH7 Or Silent Corner And The Empty Stage, Less Techno Than Sittings Targets, This Recording Smooths A Path Between The '70s And The '80s. The Lyrics Are Searching, Poetic, Psychological. It Is Difficult To Choose A Highlight: The Hypnotic "Fogwalking" Makes An Instant Impression, While The Multipart "Flight" Spans All Aspects And Facets Of Hammill's Talents: From Gentle Through Loud And Brash And Back To Gentle Again, Studded With The Inimicable Sax Of David Jackson. The Multipart Piece Is One Of Hammill's Trademarks: He Takes A Lyrical Theme And Expands It, Story-Like, Through Several Short, Connected Pieces. Another Good Example Of This Type Is "Headlong Stretch" On Roaring Forties.” Ali Sinclair, All Music Guide.

And Close As This
Used - LP - ST 73426
1986 Original. “Peter Hammill Seems To Alternate Between Releasing Unpredictable Work (The Rock Opera The Fall Of The House Of Usher, The Electronic, Experimental Loops & Reels, Etc.), And His Trademark Style (Straight-Ahead Arrangements For Voice And One Other Instrument, Usually Guitar). And Close As This Would Fall Into The Former Category, Since It's Comprised Exclusively Of Pure Arrangements (In This Case, Voice And Keyboard). It's Hard Not To Be Impressed By The Emotion In Hammill's Voice On The Songs "Other Old Clichés" And "Beside The One You Love." And Like All Of His Past Work, Hammill Will Often Unite Gentle Music With Sometimes Overtly Intense Vocals ("Too Many Yesterdays"). The Keyboards On The Album Have Been Filtered Through A Computer, Updating The Classic Hammill Sound Laid-Down On His Earlier (And Best) Work, Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night. But Hammill Would Unfortunately Not Pursue This Style For A While -- His Next Album, In A Foreign Town, Would Be The Complete Opposite Of And Close As This, Containing Overblown Production, And An Extremely Dated '80s Sound. And Close As This, However, Is One Of Hammill's Finest.” – Greg Prato, AMG

Fool's Mate
Used Import - BT-5199
1978 Japanese First Pressing With Obi. LP Appears Glossy. "Although Not On Par With His Best Albums (1977's Over, 1978's The Future Now, Etc.), This Solo Debut, Fool's Mate, Shows Van Der Graaf Generator's Peter Hammill Taking His First Steps Toward Later Prog Rock Perfection. What Makes Fool's Mate Different Than Vdgg's Material Is That It's More Mainstream, And For The Most Part, Piano And Acoustic Guitar-based. But Hammill Is Still Able Convey The Grandness Of Classic Vdgg, As Heard In The Sweeping Sounds Of "Re-awakening." And Hammill Never Grows Predictable. The Tracks "Sunshine" And "Imperial Zeppelin" Show That He Doesn't Take Himself As Seriously As Many Of His Then-Contemporaries (An Important Reason Why Hammill's Music Has Held Up Far Better Over The Years Than Some Other Prog Rockers). But Hammill's Lyrics Weren't As Sophisticated And Developed As They Would Later Come To Be, Which Is Understandable, Since It Is His Very First Solo Outing, After All. And The Album's Closing Song, "I Once Wrote Some Poems," Hinted At The Style Hammill Would Pursue More Thoroughly On Future Releases (Venomous Vocals Set Against Contrasting Music). Fool's Mate Is Not As Bad As Some Peter Hammill Purists Make It Out To Be, But Casual Fans Should Check Out Over Or The Future Now First." AMG Review By Greg Prato.

Nadir's Big Chance
New - LP - CHC 19
Sealed UK Second Issue. “Representing A Stylistic Left Turn For Peter Hammill, This Raucous, Messy, Rock Platter Was Often Cited As An Influence By The First Wave Of Punks In England (The Second Album Was Often Cited For Being David Bowie's Influence For Diamond Dogs). While Essentially Proving Himself Incapable Of Writing Three-Minute, Three-Chord Rock & Roll Numbers, Hammill (Taking On The Guise Of Rikki Nadir, I.E. Dumb Garage Rocker) Lays Into His Guitar With A Vengeance, Screaming Out Lyrics That Are Often Unintelligible (The Album Did Not Come With A Lyric Sheet; This Was The First Hammill Album Ever To Make The Listener Depend Upon The Recording), While Guy Evans, Nic Potter, David Jackson, And Hugh Banton Thrash Along Behind Him. Among The Treats Are The Title Cut, "Birthday Special," The Dolorous "Pompeii," And A Remake Of The Early Van Der Graaf Generator Single "People You Were Going To." Hammill Would Never Let Himself Be This Wild And Hairy Again.” Steven McDonald, AMG.

New Import - DALP 4.00145 J
Sealed 1986 German White Vinyl Rarity. “All But A Reunion Of Van Der Graaf Generator In Terms Of Personnel, And Hearkening To The Latter-Day Spirit In Terms Of Some Of The Tone, Skin Is Nonetheless Peter Hammill Continuing To Declare His Own Direction Minute By Minute, Rather Than Plotting Overarching Career Goals. There Is More Of A Dependence On MIDI On This Album, And A Lot Of Obvious Keyboard Support, But The Core Human Players Come Through Loud And Clear, Especially Guy Evans On Drums And David Jackson On Saxes. It Is Odd To Hear Hammill Belting His Way Through A Song With The Support Of Sampled And Synthesized Horns And A Rocking Beat, Especially When The Song Is About The Death Of Art ("Painting By Numbers"), But It's Also A Welcome Relief -- That Ability To Flex Is Exactly The Thing That Has Helped To Keep The Man's Creative Existence Alive Since 1967. The Album Is Also Highlighted By "Four Pails," A Beautiful Song By Longtime Hammill Confederate Chris Judge Smith.” All Music Guide.
