Come On Down
New - LP - SD 1554
Sealed 1970 Original. “The Album Title And The Weird Cover Portrait Of Eddie Harris With An Orange Substituting For His Head Refer To The Recording Locale — Miami. The Rationale Might Have Been To Give Miami The Same Down-Home Soul Appeal That Muscle Shoals And Memphis Were Enjoying At The Time. Certainly Harris Got A Romping Soul/Jazz/Rock Session Out Of The Trip, A Bit Overloaded On The Electric Guitar Side, But Invigorating. Ira Sullivan Joins The Fracas Now And Then With Some Uninhibited Trumpet, Donald "Duck" Dunn (From Booker T. & The MG's) Is The Anchor On Bass, And Supersessionman Cornell Dupree Dominates The Guitars. The Centerpiece Is A Long, Frantic, Rowdy, R&B Remake Of "Live Right Now" Where Harris Seems To Be Jooglin' Around On Electric Sax As Part Of The Rhythm Section, And "Fooltish" Has A Loose Swaggering Appeal. "Really" Finds Him Soulfully Crooning Through His Electric Horn For The First Time, And "Why Don't You Quit" Builds Inexorably To A Majestic Echoplex Extravaganza. Worth Hunting For In The LP Bins.” - Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide.

Exodus To Jazz
New - LP - SR 3016
Sealed 1961 Heavy Vinyl Stereo Original. 5 Stars. “One Of The Biggest Hit Jazz Lps Of The Post-Rock & Roll Era, Eddie Harris' Exodus To Jazz Seemed To Come Completely Out Of Left Field. It Was The Debut Album By A Previously Unknown Artist From An Under-Publicized Scene In Chicago, And It Was Released On The Primarily R&B-Oriented Vee Jay Label, Which Had Originally Signed Harris As A Pianist, Not A Tenor Saxophonist. The Impetus For Its Breakthrough Was Equally Unlikely; Harris Adapted Ernest Gold's Stately, Somber Theme From The Biblical Film Exodus -- Which Had Been Covered For An Easy Listening Hit By Ferrante & Teicher -- And Made It Into A Laid-Back Jazz Tune. Edited Down To 45-Rpm Length, It Became A Smash, Reaching The Pop Top 40 And Pushing The Album To The Upper Reaches Of The Charts -- A Nearly Unprecedented Feat For Instrumental Jazz In 1961. Its Stunning Popularity Sent Jazz Critics Into A Tizzy -- After All, If It Was That Accessible To A Mass Audience, There Just Had To Be Something Wrong With It, Didn't There? In Hindsight, The Answer Is No. Exodus To Jazz Is Full Of Concise, Easy-Swinging Grooves That Maintain The Appealing Quality Of The Strikingly Reimagined Title Track (Particularly Harris' Four Originals). Far Removed From His Later, Funkier Days, Harris Plays A Cool-Toned Tenor Who Owes His Biggest Debt To Stan Getz's Bop Recordings, Though There Are Touches Of Soul-Jazz As Well. He's No Slouch Technically, Either; He Plays So Far -- And So Sweetly -- In The Upper Register Of His Horn That Some Still Mistakenly Believe He Was Using An Alto Sax On Parts Of The Record. Exodus To Jazz Paved The Way For Numerous Other Crossover Successes During The '60s (Many In The Soul-Jazz Realm), And While That May Not Be A Credibility-Boosting Trend To Start, The Music Still Speaks For Itself.” Steve Huey, AMG.

High Voltage
Used - LP - SD 1529
1969 Original Presswell Pressing, Housed In A Laminated Jacket. Showing Some Ring Wear & Few Tiny Creases At Spine. With Original Inner Sleeve. "Recorded Live At Shelly's Manne Hole In Hollywood And The Village Gate In New York City, Eddie Harris Is Caught On Lp Near The Peak Of His Popularity Peddling His Electric Funk Thing With His Regular Quartet -- Jodie Christian (Piano), Melvin Jackson (Bass) And Billy Hart (Drums). His Flair For Drama Shows In The Pounding Opening Cut "Movin' On Out" Where He Builds The Tension With An Escalating Series Of Murky Cascades On His Echoplexed Electric Sax. He Can Also Be Playful With The Electronics On The Repetitively Lovely "Children's Song" (Which, Though Credited To Harris, Is Actually A South African Tune Called "Mangwene Mpulele," Previously Covered By Harry Belafonte). And Then, When You Least Expect It, Eddie Turns Around And Adopts A Husky Coleman Hawkins-like Tenor Stance On The Retro Ballad "Is There A Place For Us." Fascinating Music, And A Jazz Radio Staple In Its Time." AMG Review By Richard S. Ginell.

Mighty Like A Rose
New - LP - LPS 3025
Sealed 1961 Heavy Vinyl Stereo Original. “Mighty Like A Rose Was Eddie Harris' Follow-Up To The Smash Exodus To Jazz, And It Probably Comes As No Surprise That It's Mightily Similar In Sound And Style. One Can Hardly Blame Harris For Taking Essentially The Same Approach; It's Not Every Day That A Jazz Artist's Debut LP Makes Him A Million-Selling Star Overnight. And He Struck While The Iron Was Hot, Completing The Sessions For Mighty Like A Rose A Month Before The Single Edit Of "Exodus" Had Even Peaked On The Pop Charts. Perhaps That's Why There Are Only Two Harris Originals This Time Around; The Rest Of The Repertoire Is Mostly Standards, Plus Another Movie Theme Adaptation -- This Time Of "Spartacus" -- That Would Prove To Be The First Of Many "Exodus" Sequels Harris Recorded In His Early Period (Although Pop-Chart Lightning Never Did Strike Twice). Harris Is Once Again Joined By His Regular Chicago Backing Group Of The Period -- Guitarist Joe Diorio, Pianist Willie Pickens, Bassist William Yancey, And Drummer Harold Jones, Who Provide Solid, Appropriately Easygoing Support. Harris' Playing Strikes A Balance Between Cool Bop And Straightforward Soul-Jazz, Though It's Possible To Hear The Influence Of Detroiter Yusef Lateef Beginning To Creep In. It's All Well-Executed, And Harris' Command Of The Highest Ranges Of His Instrument Is As Lovely As Ever, Making This Date Worthwhile For Anyone Who Loved The Sound Of Exodus To Jazz.” Steve Huey, All Music.

Features Haywood Henry, Jimmy Owens, Melvin Lastie, Joe Newman, Garnett Brown, Ron Carter, Jodie Christian And Others. “One Of Eddie Harris's More Underrated Sessions, This Out-Of-Print Atlantic Album Finds Harris Creatively Playing His Electrified Tenor On A Wide Variety Of Tunes, Some Of Which Utilize Rock/Funk Rhythms Of The Period. Although His Supporting Cast Includes Such Fine Players As Baritonist Haywood Henry, Trumpeter Jimmy Owens And Pianist Jodie Christian, The Focus Throughout Is On Harris's Distinctive Playing. Highlights Include "Live Right Now," "It's Crazy" And "Theme In Search Of A T.V. Commercial.” Scott Yanow, All Music Guide.

Silver Cycles
Used - LP - SD 1517
1969 US Silver Foil Jacket Original Monarch Pressing. Silver-Foil Cover Shows Some Shelf Wear And Scuff Marks. “Still Riding High From "Listen Here," Harris Really Started Experimenting Here With A Dazzlingly Eclectic LP That Must Have Left His New Fans Wondering Just Who The Real Eddie Harris Was. There Is Good Old Latinized Funk In The Opening Cuts, "Free At Last" And "1974 Blues," But What Was One To Make Of The Next One, "Smoke Signals," With Its Interplanetary Echoplexed Electric Sax And Ethereal Wordless Female Voices? Then It's On To A Long-Limbed Coltrane Tribute On Pianist Jodie Christian's "Naima"-Like "Coltrane's View," A Wailing Cry Of Raw Pain With A Huge Band Of Horns, Strings And Voices ("I'm Gonna Leave You By Yourself"), Another Avant-Garde Electronic Extravaganza ("Silver Cycles") And...Well, You Get The Point; There's A Surprise Around Every Bend. The Music Is By Turns Swinging, Touching, Feverish, Detached, Nightmarish, And Peaceful, Bursting With New Ideas Generated From Harris' Plunge Into Electronics. This Album Has Been Unjustly Overlooked, Probably Because Harris Was Selling A Lot Of Records And Getting Airplay At The Time (A Cardinal Sin For Purists), Or Perhaps For Its Free, Anything-Goes '60s Spirit.” All Music Guide - Richard S. Ginell.

Sings The Blues
New - LP - SD 1625
Sealed 1972 Original. Unable To Confirm The Pressing Plant Info. "Eddie Harris Had Sung Through His Horn Prior To This Release, But Not To Such A Great Extent As On This Wide-Ranging LP. Here He Tries To Shape Words Through The Filters Of A Reed Mouthpiece, A Slightly Noisy Wah-Wah Pedal And Electronic Amplification, And The Results Are Genuinely Expressive Despite The Aura Of Gimmickry. Indeed "Please Let Me Go," Thanks To Harris' Pleading Sax Vocal And Richard Evans' String Drapery, Deliberately And Hauntingly Evokes Billie Holiday's Orchestral Sessions From The 1950s. In The Category Of Funk, "Ten Minutes To Four" Is Almost A Reworking Of "1974 Blues" In The Exotic 10/4 Meter And, "Walk With Me" Could Have Been A Minor Hit Single With Its Catchy Tune, Wah-Wah Sax Vocals And Stentorian Brass Riffs. Finally, If For No Other Reason Than Ego (Harris Admitted So Himself), He Tackles "Giant Steps" At A Galloping Latin Beat, The Scattershot Solo With The Freak High Notes All In His Own Style. Another Fascinating Installment In Harris' Long Atlantic Period." AMG Review by Richard S. Ginell.

Versatile Eddie Harris
New - LP - SD 8807
Sealed, Tough To Find 1981 Original Recorded In 1977. Tiny Saw Cut. “This LP Has Quite A Bit Of Variety From Tenor-Saxophonist Eddie Harris. Most Of The Selections Are From February 20, 1977, Although There Are Also Two Slightly Earlier Cuts That Feature A Rare Sideman Outing For Trumpeter Don Ellis, And A Humorous Version Of "That Is Why You're Overweight" From 1981. Otherwise Harris Is Showcased With A Quartet That Includes Guitarist Ronald Muldrow. In Addition Harris Has Duets With Muldrow ("No One Would Believe") And Drummer Paul Humphrey ("One Man Section") And Takes A Vocal On "Drams Are For Real." No Matter What The Setting, The Highly Original And Always Funky Eddie Harris Is Heard In Prime Form.” Scott Yanow, AMG.
