A Wilder Alias
New - LP - CTI 6040
Sealed, Rare 1974 Gatefold Original. Features Hubert Laws, Joe Farrell, Harvie Swartz, Steve Gadd And Roy Pennington. Songs Are "A Wilder Alias," "Niki's Song," "Waltz For Dana," "The Way We Were" And "Good And Rich." “Jazz Vocal Duo Jackie Cain & Roy Kral's 1974 CTI Release A Wilder Alias Features The Brilliant Vocal Interplay And Crisply Harmonized Lines The Two Were Known For, Albeit In A More Modal And Experimental Setting Befitting The Aesthetic Of The Time Period. Rather Than Covering Standards Here, Most Of The Melodies Are Sung Without Actual Lyrics -- And The Lyrics That Are Here Are More Like Sung Poetry -- Making For Vocals That Blend Right In Next To The Other Instruments. In That Sense, Such Tracks As The Sprightly, Swinging "Niki's Song," The Expansive Title Track, And The Fast-Moving "Waltz For Dana" Bring To Mind Something Along The Lines Of McCoy Tyner -- Kral Is A Superb Keyboardist As Well As Singer -- Backing The Vocal Ensemble Free Design. It Also Doesn't Hurt That Joining Jackie & Roy Here Are Bassist Harvie Swartz, Drummer Steve Gadd, Vibraphonist Roy Pennington, Flutist Hubert Laws, And Saxophonist Joe Farrell. These Are Ambitious, Funky, And Somewhat Fusion-Style Cuts That Fans Of '70s Jazz Should Certainly Check Out.” Matt Collar, AMG.

Time & Love
New - LP - CTI 6019
Factory Sealed 1972 Heavy-Duty, Laminated Gatefold Original, No Cuts! Featuring Hubert Laws, Paul Desmond, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham & Others. “With The Backing Of A Large Orchestra, Lush Even By Arranger Don Sebesky's Standards, Jackie And Roy Front An Exquisitely Recorded Creed Taylor Production That Mostly Falls Outside The Idiom Of Jazz Into A Polished, Jazzy, Classical/Easy Listening Plane. More To The Point, The Collective Taste Of Taylor And The Krals Is Incredibly Rich, For They Tap Into A Small Mother Lode Of Scintillating Contemporary Material That Jazz People Rarely Touched, Then Or Now -- Like Leonard Bernstein's Beguiling "A Simple Song" (From Mass) Or Michel Colombier's "We Could Be Flying" (The High Point Of His Wings Pop Symphony). Sebesky's Arrangements Burrow Deeply Into His Classical Sources, Whether Juxtaposing Bach's "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring" On Top Of The Title Cut Or Dovetailing Debussy's "Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Faun" Into Jerome Moross' "Lazy Afternoon"; Villa-Lobos' "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5" Is A Perfect Choice For A Genre-Fusing Vocalese By Jackie. Paul Desmond Pokes His Quizzical Head Into The Brubeck/Gershwin Medley "Summer Song/Summertime" -- Who Better Than Old Paul? -- And Hubert Laws Enhances The Bernstein And Colombier Tunes. Although Neither Jackie Nor Roy Do Anything Resembling Jazz Singing Here, Forget About Categories; This Is Gorgeous Music That Cannot Be Shackled To One Genre.” AMG - Richard S. Ginell.
