Back Roads And Abandoned Motels
Used Import - 19075841411
2018 Europe pressing with hype sticker on shrink. "Back Roads and Abandoned Motels" is the tenth studio album by American alternative country band The Jayhawks, released on July 13, 2018. The album features a collection of songs co-written by the band's lead vocalist and guitarist Gary Louris with other artists, including tracks that were previously recorded by those artists. This unique approach showcases the collaborative spirit that has often defined Louris's career, giving fans a glimpse into the breadth of his songwriting prowess.
The album includes contributions from all current members of The Jayhawks, with Karen Grotberg (keyboards, vocals), Tim O'Reagan (drums, vocals), and Marc Perlman (bass) bringing their signature harmonies and instrumental textures to the fore. "Back Roads and Abandoned Motels" offers a mix of reflective, melodic tunes with a quintessentially Americana feel, adhering to the band's roots while also exploring new lyrical and musical landscapes. Standout tracks such as "Everybody Knows" and "Gonna Be a Darkness" highlight the band's ability to blend poignant storytelling with rich, engaging soundscapes.

Hollywood Town Hall
Used Import - 88697842141
2010 180gm Audiophile remastered reissue from Music On Vinyl. Tiny top seam crack; Vinyl close to NM, some light stress mark and gentle run-in noise. "It was one of the more unlikely major label releases of 1992 -- nothing to do with grunge, certainly not a last holdout from '80s mainstream sludge. On the flip side, it wasn't really the incipient alternative country/No Depression sound either, for all that there was a clear influence from the likes of Gram Parsons and fellow travelers throughout the grooves. This wasn't a sepia-toned collection of murder ballads or the similarly minded efforts that were almost overreactions to Nashville's triumphalism throughout the '90s. At base, Hollywood Town Hall found a finely balanced point -- accessible enough for should-have-been success (sclerotic classic rock station programmers were fools to ignore this while still playing the Eagles into the ground) but bowing to no trends. Its lack of variety tells against a bit -- while there are certainly stronger moments than others, most of the songs do have a tendency to blend into each other -- but the core strengths of the group come through. George Drakoulias fleshed out the sound just enough, with the side help of performers like Benmont Tench and Nicky Hopkins adding fine extra touches without swamping the identity of the group. Piano and organ may be prevalent, but it's really Olson and Louris' great harmonies that are the core of things, giving songs like "Crowded in the Wings" and "Settled Down Like Rain" a high-and-lonesome sparkle. Callahan's a good drummer, if not particularly noteworthy, but he keeps the pace steady without dominating the tracks, Drakoulias keeping him back in the mix a bit. Olson's eventual departure isn't really explained by this disc -- he might have been tired of the attempt to aim for commercial success, but this sounds more like something made for the group's own satisfaction that connects beyond it as well." All Music Guide - Ned Raggett.

Jayhawks
Used - LP - 7001
Though Lacking The Almost Telepathic Interplay Later Developed By Frontmen Mark Olson And Gary Louris, The Jayhawks' Self Titled Debut (Issued In A Tiny Pressing Of Just A Few Thousand Copies) Is A Fair Indication Of The Remarkable Things Still To Come From The Band. Complete With Song Titles Which Could Have Been Cribbed From The Old Replacements Records --- "Six Pack On The Dashboard," "The Liquor Store Came First," "I'm Not In Prison," And So Forth. The Record Owes A Clear Debt To The Groups Minneapolis Stomping Grounds, But Evidence Of The Jayhawks' Own Distinct Identity Can Be Found In The Fluid Guitar Work As Well As In The Olson And Louris' Harmonies, Which Even This Early In The Game Are Graceful And Rich. Both LP And Cover Are Near Mint.

Mockingbird Time
New - LP - 11611
Sealed 2011 2LP 180gm HQ Gatefold Original. During Their Heyday In The First Half Of The 1990s, The Jayhawks Perfected A Captivating Sound That Seamlessly Blended The Elegant Folk-Rock Of The Byrds, The Adventurousness Of Buffalo Springfield, The Hippiebilly Soulfulness Of The Flying Burrito Brothers And The Soaring Harmonies Of The Beach Boys. So It's Richly Ironic That Their Reappearance Coincides With A Dramatic Resurgence Of The Musical Approach They Played Such A Central Role In Perpetuating - But This Time Around, The Jayhawks Themselves Are Revered As Icons By The Young Bands Carrying On Those Same Traditions, And It's Their Own Legacy That They're Advancing. On Mockingbird Time, Their Eighth Album, And The First With The Original Lineup Since 1995's Tomorrow The Green Grass, They're Once Again Pushing The Envelope In Songs And Performances Of Rarefied Dynamism And Grace. The Album's Shapes And Textures Range From The String-Laden Grandeur Of "Hide Your Colors" And The Widescreen Vistas Of "Tiny Arrows" To The Streamlined 12-String Jangle Of "She Walks In So Many Ways" And The Amphetamine Frenzy Of "High Water Blues."

Paging Mr. Proust
New - LP - SHAMLP-102
Sealed 2016 Original Gatefold. Top Left Corner Bump. "Paging Mr. Proust" is the ninth studio album by American alternative country and rock band The Jayhawks, released on April 29, 2016. The album marks a return to the band's signature harmony-laden sound while also exploring new sonic landscapes. Sound Of Lies
Used - LP - B0021158-01
2014 US 2LP remastered reissue in shrink with custom hype sticker. Features 5 bonus tracks, new liner notes and new photos. "Following Mark Olson's amicable departure, the remaining Jayhawks reconvened under the direction of Gary Louris to record Sound of Lies, the band's most ambitious album to date. Like Wilco's Being There, Sound of Lies uses country-rock as a foundation and wanders off into a variety of different sonic territories, including surf rock and Beatlesque pop, bringing the music closer to the sound of adult alternative pop/rock. Although the surface of the album is pleasant and melodic, Louris has written a uniformly harrowing set of songs, inspired both by the dissolution of his partnership with Olson and a recent divorce. The lyrics have a naked, emotional honesty which would have been more affecting if the music echoed its sentiment, yet the record still has a subtle grace and power, proving that the Jayhawks remain a distinctive band without Olson." All Music Guide - Thom Owens.

The Jayhawks - (aka The Bunkhouse Album)
Used - LP - B0014270-01
2010 Vinyl reissue of the extremely rare 1986 debut album, still in shrink. Only copies of the original LP were ever pressed, it's never been on CD & it's been completely unavailable for nearly 25 years. "The Jayhawks' 1986 debut album (often called "The Bunkhouse Album" by fans for the label then-manager Charlie Pine founded to release it) documented the group when they were still young and green, and though it captures some strong and confident performances from a fine band, it's clear they were still a few years away from finding the sound that would make The Blue Earth and Hollywood Town Hall some of the most memorable music to come from the first wave of alt-country. The Jayhawks sounds more like a proper country album than anything else in their catalog; the rockabilly and vintage C&W licks lead guitarist Gary Louris had learned in his earlier group, Safety Last, were still a major part of his arsenal (especially on "Misery Tavern" and "Behind Bars"), and Cal Hand's pedal steel is a key part of the arrangements on tunes such as "Falling Star," "The Liquor Store Came First," and "Six Pack on the Dashboard." The pace is surprisingly peppy compared to the contemplative rhythms of the Jayhawks' best work (drummer Norm Rogers, who would later do a stylistic 180 and join Minneapolis noise-mongers the Cows, drives most of the tunes with a solid, uptempo shuffle), and though "Let the Critics Wonder" and "King of Kings" anticipate the sound of the band's classic era, most of the Bunkhouse album sounds like the work of a smart, lively country-rock band still looking for the approach that would truly set them apart. Mark Olson and Gary Louris' songwriting was skillful and literate, and the Jayhawks play with fire and imagination on their debut, but these 13 speedy numbers (which spin by in less than 38 minutes) mark a phase they were staring to outgrow even as they were recording this music; there's nothing here for anyone involved to be ashamed of, but The Jayhawks is still clearly juvenilia, enjoyable as it is." All Music Guide - Mark Deming.

Tomorrow The Green Grass
New Import - 00602537864300
Sealed 2023 reissue. "Released in 1992, Hollywood Town Hall wasn't a hit, but it received enough rave reviews to considerably raise the Jayhawks' profile, and it certainly heightened expectations for their next album. On 1995's Tomorrow the Green Grass, the Jayhawks found themselves in the tricky situation of trying to match the quality of Hollywood Town Hall without simply repeating themselves, and they came remarkably close to achieving that daunting task. Rather than simply mimic the warm and unaffected sound of Hollywood Town Hall, the Jayhawks reached for a broader and more eclectic approach on Tomorrow the Green Grass; with the presence of new keyboard player Karen Grotberg and the addition of strings on several tracks, the album certainly sounded fuller and more artful, but Mark Olson and Gary Louris' harmonies were still the band's secret weapon, and were as pure and emotionally compelling as ever, while Louris' electric guitar solos gave the songs real rock & roll muscle without disturbing the essentially gentle nature of their music. And the best songs on Tomorrow the Green Grass are every bit as good as anything on Hollywood Town Hall, especially the opening hat trick of "Blue," "I'll Run Away," and "Miss Williams' Guitar" (the latter a joyous love letter to Olson's new bride, Victoria Williams). But while nearly every song on Hollywood Town Hall seemed like a classic in context, the greater stylistic variety of Tomorrow the Green Grass had the consequence of making a few of the songs in the second half of the album seem less than essential, most notably "Ann Jane" and "Pray for Me," though they hardly counted as disappointments, and the album rallies to a rousing finale with "Ten Little Kids." If Hollywood Town Hall is inarguably the Jayhawks' best album, Tomorrow the Green Grass runs a very close second, and though it was to be the group's last album with Mark Olson, the eclectic approach pointed the way to the sound and style of the fine records the Louris-led version of the band would go on to make." All Music Guide – Mark Deming
