Parker, Graham - 12 Haunted Episodes
Sealed 1995 180gm HQ Original Released On The Classic Records Imprint. "12 Haunted Episodes, Graham Parker's first album recorded for an independent label, is appropriately intimate and warm, recalling the simplicity of Struck By Lightning, but with a gentler approach. Parker makes no concessions to commercial radio on the record, dispensing with the slick productions that tended to plague his albums for the past decade or so. That doesn't mean the record is raw -- it means that it's more personal and intimate. At its core, 12 Haunted Episodes is not that different than Parker's records since The Mona Lisa's Sister: most of the songs are love songs to his wife and daughter, or they're tales of an aging rebel, trying to keep his youthful fire alive as he grows older. However, the songs are measured and reflective, signaling that he's settling gracefully into his middle age. When Parker does get bitter -- such as his attack on capitalism, "Disney's America" -- it doesn't seem vengeful, it seems regretful, which helps make 12 Haunted Episodes his most mature album to date." Herman, Woody - Raven Speaks
Sealed 1972 Original. Cut Corner. Features Pat Martino, Frank Tiberi, Gregory Herbert, Harold Garrett, Al Porcino, Charles Davis, Harold Danko And Others. "Some of Woody Herman's funkiest jams from the 70's. The band scolds "Fat Mama" in the opening Herbie Hancock tune, one in which I am sure Herbie is quite proud. The band touches Hancock again with their rockin' rendition of "Watermelon Man", another tune worth the purchase. The opening flute melody is tremendous, as is the speed of this tune. Other solid ballad contributions from the "Summer of 42" theme and the quicker paced "Alone Again (Naturally)" add depth to this up tempo set. Lastly, but certainly not least, is the quintessential "Reunion at Newport 1972". The timing and intricacies of this arrangement is the primary piece on "the Raven Speaks" and is the reason I come back to the album often. The arrangement is sheer complexity and tempo interlaced with the deft talents of Woody's core band. A high point of the talented musicians and their ability to swing fast and loose and absolutely kill it on vinyl. I recommend for "Reunion at Newport" alone, a must have for Woody Herman aficionados." Scott Dettman AMG....more

Woods, Phil - Three For All
1981 Japanese Pressing Featuring Tommy Flanagan And Red Mitchell. Appears Unplayed. "This is a bit of an unusual outing for Phil Woods, as Tommy Flanagan and Red Mitchell are his only musical partners for these 1981 sessions. The lack of drums enables the musicians to take a few extra liberties as they respond to one another. Woods is in top form, engaging his partners in a three-way conversation that seems effortless. His robust "Reet's Neet" benefits from Flanagan's fluid lines and Mitchell's potent bass, while Woods' touching ballad "Goodbye Mr. Evans," a tribute to the late pianist Bill Evans (who died a few months prior to these sessions), begins with a hauntingly beautiful piano solo, with Mitchell making a delayed entrance just prior to his solo and the composer waiting until just past the five-minute mark to add his emotional statement, which conveys his admiration for Evans' music. Flanagan's driving "Three for All" has a Latin undercurrent, with plenty of sparks flying among the players. Mitchell contributed three originals, including the loping ballad "It's Time to Emulate the Japanese," the lyrical "Talking," and the upbeat "You're Me," which features Woods on clarinet."
