Afro-Cuban
Audiophile - LP - BLP 1535
Factory Sealed 45 RPM 180 Gram Limited Edition 2LP Deluxe Gatefold. One Of The Truly Great Trumpeters, Kenny Dorham Had His Own Sound, Was A Skilled Songwriter And Was A First-Rate Talent Scout Who Is Credited With Discovering Joe Henderson. One Of The Early Beboppers, He Perfectly Led The Way To Hard Bop In Both His Playing And His Writing. Dorham Recorded A Series Of Exciting Albums For Blue Note. Afro-Cuban Was The First And One Of The Most Stirring. Dating From 1955, Its Mixture Of Latin Music And Hard Bop Was Ahead Of Its Time. Using Such Notables As Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, J.J. Johnson And Art Blakey (Whose Drumming Is Dazzling Throughout) Plus Percussionist Patato Valdes, Dorham Contributes Memorable Originals, Colorful Arrangements That Perfectly Set Up The Solos, And His Distinctive Trumpet. Kenny Dorham, Who Plays With Passion And Intensity Throughout This Set, Leads The All-Star Group Through Such Numbers As "K.D.'S Motion," "Minor's Holiday" And The Mambo Of "Basheer's Dream." Even The Set's Only Ballad, "Lotus Flower," Is Just Barely Restrained Enough To Keep The Ensemble From Exploding. This Album Will Raise The Temperature In Any Room By At Least Five Degrees.

Audiophile - Used - IMP6042
2022 180gm Limited Edition, #3172/5000. Housed In A Heavy-Duty Tip-On Jacket, Still In Original Outer Sleeve With Custom Hype Sticker & Impex Sticker Seal. "Kenny Dorham's Matador Can Safely Claim The All Too Common Distinction Of Being A Classic Among Jazz Connoisseurs While Virtually Unknown To The Casual Listener. Dorham Is Joined Here By Jackie Mclean, Bobby Timmons, Teddy Smith, And J.C. Moses, All Of Whom Deliver Outstanding Performances. More Than Anything, This Session Is Perhaps Best Known For Including A Stunning Version Of Mclean's Composition "Melody For Melonae," Used Less Than A Month Earlier On His Groundbreaking Blue Note LP Let Freedom Ring. For This Session, Though, The Tune Is Renamed "Melanie" And, If Not Better, This Version At Least Rivals The Take Under Mclean's Leadership. For Starters, The Addition Of Another Horn Adds Some Tonal Depth To The Proceedings, A Situation Arguably Lacking In The Tune's Earlier Recording. Also Of Note Is What Has To Be Bobby Timmons' Most Intense Moment On Record. One Rarely Has The Opportunity To Hear Timmons Dig And Scrape As Hard As He Does During This Solo, And His Barely Audible Vocal Accompaniment (À La Bud Powell) Only Helps To Prove This Point. This Is A Case Where A Performer Not Commonly Associated With Seriously Stretching Out Goes At It With A Life-Affirming Fervor, Making "Melanie" A Treat For Listeners Who Revel In Emotional Performances. Other Highlights Include The Opener, "El Matador," A 5/4 Number That, Frankly, Fades Out Just When Things Were Getting Good, And The Otherwise Unaccompanied Dorham/timmons Duet, "Prelude." A Fantastic Session By Any Standard." All Music Guide - Brandon Burke.

Quiet Kenny
New - LP - DIW 9010 / NJLP 8225
New, Unplayed Special Limited Edition Japanese 180gm Mono Pressing With Obi. Cut At The JVC Cutting Center. “In The Liner Notes Of Quiet Kenny, Former Downbeat Magazine Publisher Jack Maher States That Trumpeter Kenny Dorham's Music Is Not Necessarily The Demure, Balladic, Rapturous Jazz One Might Associate As Romantic Or Tranquil. Cool And Understated Might Be Better Watchwords For What The Ultra-Melodic Dorham Achieves On This Undeniably Well Crafted Set Of Standards And Originals That Is Close To Containing His Best Work Overall During A Far Too Brief Career. Surrounded By An Excellent Rhythm Team Of The Equally Sensitive Pianist Tommy Flanagan, Emerging Bassist Paul Chambers, And The Always-Beneficial Drummer Art Taylor, Dorham And His Mates Are Not Prone To Missteps Or Overt Exaggerations. One Of Dorham's All-Time Best Tunes "Lotus Blossom" Kicks Off The Set With Its Bop To Latin Hummable Melody, Fluid Dynamics, And Dorham's Immaculate, Unpretentious Tone. "Old Folks," A Classic Ballad, Is Done Mid-Tempo, While The True "Quiet" Factor Comes Into Play On Interesting Version Of "My Ideal" Where Dorham Gingerly Squeezes Out The Slippery Wet Notes, And On The Sad Ballad "Alone Together." The Rest Of The Material Is Done In Easygoing, Unforced Fashion, Especially The Originals "Blue Friday" And The Simple Swinger "Blue Spring Shuffle" Which Is Not Really A Shuffle. Never Known As A Boisterous Or Brash Player, But Also Not A Troubadour Of Romanticism -- Until He Started Singing -- Dorham's Music Is Also Far From Complacent, And This Recording Established Him As A Top Five Performer In Jazz On His Instrument. It Comes Recommended To All.” Michael G. Nastos, AMG.

Quiet Kenny
Audiophile - Used - NJLP 8225
2017 200gm Reissue Of New Jazz 8225. "Quiet Kenny" is a jazz album by the trumpeter Kenny Dorham, originally released in 1959 on the New Jazz label. The album is noted for its understated, lyrical approach and features a quartet comprising Dorham on trumpet, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Arthur Taylor on drums. Known for its relaxed and intimate vibe, "Quiet Kenny" showcases Dorham's melodic sensibility and technical proficiency, making it a standout recording in his discography. Key tracks include "Lotus Blossom" and "My Ideal," which highlight Dorham's ability to convey deep emotion through his instrument.
The album has been praised for its cohesive group interplay and the subtlety of its arrangements. "Quiet Kenny" is often recommended as an essential listen for fans of hard bop and those looking to explore the softer, more introspective side of jazz. The quartet's synergy is palpable throughout the record, with each musician contributing to the overall mood while allowing Dorham's trumpet to remain at the forefront. The production quality and musicianship ensure that "Quiet Kenny" remains a timeless piece, reflecting the nuanced artistry of its era.
