Fishing For Fishies
Colored Vinyl - Used - FLT-048
2019 US Stereo pressing on the Green marbled "Toxic Landfill" edition vinyl. Light run-in surface noise, music dominating playback. Comes with 24" x 36" fold out wall poster. "After taking a break from releasing new albums for over a year, the always entertaining, often brilliant King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard returned in 2019 with Fishing for Fishies, a blues-inspired recording that is their most accessible album since 2015's Paper Mâché Dream Balloon and a continuation of their deliriously warped exploration of the sonic cosmos. They've shelved the microtonal instruments, shut down the synths (for the most part), and dialed down their ambitions in favor of laid-back, rambling tunes that feature pianos, gentle vocals, acoustic instruments, and lots of both blues and fancy harp. It's not exactly a step back from the epic albums they had been cranking out, but it seems like they were ready to do something a little more relaxed and mellow. Being who they are, though, it never gets snoozy and their version of rambling boogie is still plenty odd. "Boogieman Sam" is the most normal-sounding track on the record with its choogling groove and singsong vocals; it also features harp glissandos, strange vocal effects, and a long and wobbly guitar break. Here, and throughout, they sound like a jam band that was shot into space and came back to earth with alien DNA. "Plastic Boogie" is another weird one that starts out calm enough but goes spinning off the rails frantically by the end, "Fishing for Fishies" is super hooky back-porch folk with falsetto vocals, vocoder, and typically left-field lyrics, and "The Cruel Millennial" is a wicked blast of funky AOR built around double bass, bongos, fiery guitar wrangling, and tough vocals from the record's MVP, harmonica player Ambrose Kenny-Smith. This being King Gizzard, they do take some fun detours like "The Bird Song," a sweetly catchy slice of piano pop, and "Real's Not Real," a baroque-meets-boogie song that shows just how brilliant the band are at fusing styles to make something new and unusual. They really take this trick to extremes on the record's final two songs. "Acarine" is built on a rolling boogie rhythm and features Kenny-Smith wailing on harp, but it keeps adding spacy synths and sequences until the song ends up sounding like HAL taking a crack at the blues, then segueing into a shimmering disco groove. It really shouldn't work at all, but somehow the band find a way for it to make sense. The vocoder-sung, key-filled "Cyboogie" almost sounds reasonable in context, even though the idea of synth-prog set to a boogie beat is patently bonkers. Again, the band make it seem like the most natural thing in the world. Once again, King Gizzard deliver a record that lives up to their high standard even though it (mostly) is free from ambition and drama. Now that they've added the blues to their long list of styles (garage, metal, folk, psych, jazz, and prog) that they've warped and remade in Gizzard fashion, what's next?". Flying Microtonal Banana (Explorations Into Microtonal Tuning Volume 1)
Colored Vinyl - Used - FLT-028
2021 US new, unplayed repressing on translucent "Radioactive" yellow. No "Made in CZ" above barcode. "King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard spent their early years honing their tripped-out psychedelic pop sound, then after proving themselves masters of the form with the 2014 album I'm in Your Mind Fuzz, decided that every release they did would have some kind of thematic hook or experiment driving its creation and execution. Paper Mâché Dream Balloon was all done on acoustic instruments; Quarters consisted of four ten-minute songs; and the amazing prog-psych epic Nonagon Infinity was touted as the world's first continuously looping album. A band less dedicated to being weird would have packed it in at this point and gone back to cranking out blown-out psych rockers, but these guys are way too dedicated for that. For their 2017 album Flying Microtonal Banana, King Gizzard decided to investigate microtonal tuning, a non-Western way of tuning that involves intervals smaller than a semitone. They had a custom-made guitar gifted to them, then realized they needed to create other microtonal instruments to match. With a $200 budget each, the bandmembers bought new gear and altered the instruments so they could be tuned in a way that made them compatible. The new tunings don't radically change the band's way of doing things; the songs are still crunchy, twisting jams that have huge hooks and exciting sections of instrumental prowess where they join together in a furious wave of sound that almost feels unstoppable. This time though, the melodies are are more exotic (to ears attuned to Western music anyway) and complex, as the leads are played by the differently tuned guitars, howling Turkish horns, and murky keyboards, giving them a psychedelic twist. The opening "Rattlesnake" sets the scene over seven long minutes of hypnotic guitars and chants, then the following tunes take things to mellower, trance-like places ("Melting"), dole out intense bursts of heavy rock that wouldn't have sounded out of place on Nonagon ("Open Water"), delve into some East-meets-West balladry ("Billabong Valley"), and make the kind of expansive, perfectly layered psych they've specialized in for years ("Nuclear Fusion," "Anoxia"). As the album concludes, it's clear that the experiment was a success and that the microtuned instruments fit in perfectly with their oddball aesthetic. It's also evident that King Gizzard can do no wrong, and as the first of five planned albums for 2017, Flying Microtonal Banana will be hard for them to top. It also sends a message to other bands plying a similar trade that they better step up their games if they want to stay close to King Gizzard's level." All Music Guide - Tim Sendra. more

"While In Lockdown, The Dudes In King Gizzard Spent Their Time Recording Songs. No Shock There Since That's Just About All They Seem To Do Given The Prodigious Output. Almost Everything Here Sounds Like They Are Firing On All Cylinders; Whether It's The Rambling Road-trip Rock Of "East West Link," The Funky Clavinet Jam "If Not Now, Then When?," Boogie Rock-adjacent "Ataraxia," Or 100 Mph Psychedelic Blowout "See Me," The Band Come Across With More Vigor And Verve Than They Did On K.g. Even When They Slow Things Down, Like On The Evil-sounding Swamp Rocker "O.n.e." Or The Medieval Metal Ballad "Pleura," They Sound Tightly Wound And Fierce, Instead Of Borderline Lethargic. Even The Songs That Sound A Little More Familiar Than Maybe They Should -- "Static Electricity," For One -- Have Enough Sparking Energy To Carry Them Across The Finish Line In Fine Style. Add In The Thundering, Slow-motion Metal Blowout That Ends The Album ("K.g.l.w."), And The Result Is One Of The Band's Best, Most Engaging Records. It's Not Just A Follow-up To Their First Mildly Disappointing Venture, It's A Bracing Reminder Of Just How Thrilling King Gizzard Can Be At Their Peak." AllMusic Review by Tim Sendra. more

2021 Limited edition Spanish "vinyl lucky dip" pressing, only 2000 copies, pressed on "Roja" red vinyl. Housed in a brown paper bag; Small tears at top. "It's not every band that feels confident enough to completely change their sound on almost every album they release. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have made a career of exploring new sounds, taking left turns, and doing the unexpected in glorious fashion. 2021's Butterfly 3000 (their second of the year and approximately 500th album overall) is a deep dive into synthesizer-driven dream pop. The group built the songs around arpeggiated synth loops, adding drums, more synths, and the occasional acoustic guitar, then topped the mix with the most laid-back and sugary Stu Mackenzie vocals to date. It's a warm bath of sound, and King Gizzard apply it to some of their most peaceful, blissful, and hooky songs. There are hints of Panda Bear at his poppiest, overt references to the Beach Boys, and general vibes that can best be described as chill AF. It's a big change from some of their most recent work -- especially the thrash metal concept album about the death of the planet -- and it feels like the band have stepped out of a gloomy place and straight into a burning-hot summer afternoon. It may seem strange to say that about a record dominated by synthesized sounds, but the keyboards and loops are as bubbly as soda pop and as light as helium-filled balloons. Tracks like "Dreams" and "Yours" have a gently uplifting feel, "2.02 Killer Year" rambles merrily as the electronic oscillations and Mackenzie's falsetto have a pillow fight, and "Ya Love" glitters like a coin reflecting the sun. Anyone fearing that all the breeziness means the band have lost their experimental edge will be mollified by songs like "Blue Morpho," which adds some hazy psychedelia to the mix, or "Black Hot Soup," which comes off like a blend of their acoustic albums and microtonal jaunts with a little bit of electric guitar noise added. King Gizzard may have taken yet another creative leap, but as with all their other daring jumps into the abyss, they haven't left behind the questing spirit, sonic adventurism, and inspired songwriting. Anyone thinking that they might finally be running out of steam will have to readjust their timetables; Butterfly 3000 is the work of a band with a million ideas and the skills to make them all work like a dream. In this case, a shiny, happy dream that leaves the sleeper feeling refreshed and at peace upon awakening." All Music Guide - Tim Sendra. more

Nonagon Infinity
Colored Vinyl - Used - ATO0301
2020 new, unplayed gatefold repress on custom "Neon Red/Neon Yellow/Black Mix". "The prolific Australian psychedelic pop combo King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard aren't the kind of band prone to repeating themselves. Over the course of their short career, they've established themselves as voracious sonic explorers who aren't afraid to take chances and never met a gimmick they didn't like. In 2015 alone they released Quarters, a jazz-prog epic featuring four songs that were each exactly ten minutes long, and the laid-back summer folk Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, which was recorded on only acoustic instruments. With such a weird and varied track record, their 2016 album, Nonagon Infinity, could have gone just about anywhere and done anything. On it, King Gizzard deliver their best trick yet to go along with their most focused, most ferocious music to date. The album is designed to flow continuously from song to song with no breaks in what the band calls an infinite loop, and unless one is listening very closely it's hard to tell where one song stops and the next begins. To help make the gimmick work, the songs are very similar in energy and approach, with lyrics from one song turning up in another and guitar riffs cycling through from one section to another. The energy level is mainly set to search and destroy throughout as the drums thunder, the lightning-fast guitars slash and burn, and the spacy vocals often break out into ecstatic shouts. The band has added some supercharged Sabbathy metal to its sound, and it works very well. The opening suite of songs punches fast and hard, like someone is slapping you repeatedly with a copy of a Saxon album. It's way more blown-out and weird than that, but you can hear a lot of late-'70s no-frills metal in the sound. The rest of the record is a little more varied, with moments of calm proggy respite, jazz-rock dreaminess, and blown-out psych-pop to balanced the frantic, sustained attack. The way the album is put together is an impressive feat, but almost beside the point since each song within the loop is worthy of standing alone. King Gizzard's inventive sound, giant hooks, and hard-as-titanium playing make Nonagon Infinity not only their best album yet, but maybe the best psych-metal-jazz-prog album ever. That can be debated, but at the very least artists like the Flaming Lips, Ty Segall, and others who think they are doing something cool and weird should check it out and take a few notes." Paper Mâché Dream Balloon
New - LP - 0882239213
Sealed With Orange Hype Sticker. "After Dazzling Fans Of Long, Twisting, Freak-out Jams With Their Epic Quarters Album, The Ever-whimsical Australian Group King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Make A Stylistic Left Turn On Paper Mâché Dream Balloon. Recorded Mainly On Acoustic Instruments, Liberally Spiced With Flutes, Violins, And Harmonicas, And Full Of Concise, Quietly Hooky Tunes, The Record Sounds Like The Most Eccentric Batch Of Back-Porch Pop To Come Along Since The Prime Of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. From The Opening "Sense" Right Through To The End, The Group Sets A Laid-Back, Relaxed Mood And Rarely Breaks Free, Or Breaks A Sweat. Unlike Previous Albums, The Band Seems Content To Deliver Songs That Are Easily Accessed And Simple To Break Down Instead Of Jumping From One Idea To The Next. Fans Of Their Past Wild Musical Shifts And Swings, And Electric Guitars, Might Find This Record A Little On The Mild Side, But The Songs Are Good Enough To Keep Any Leftovers Happy. Quite A Few Of Them Have Big, Sunny Hooks That Can Bring Smiles On A Rainy Day ("Time = Fate," "Most Of What I Like"), While The Rest Are Sweet Enough To Worry A Diabetic (Especially The Title Track And The Lovely "Dirt"). Besides, Even With The Calmer, Less Frantic Approach The Band Takes, There Is Still Enough Weirdness On Display To Keep Things Very Interesting. "Trapdoor," For One, Is The Kind Of Tripped-out, Goofy Jam The Band Specializes In, And Even The Songs That Sound Pretty Normal Have A Little Bit Of Oddness Creeping Around The Edges. It Keeps Them From Falling Into The Blissed-out Jam Band Trap, Even Though Fans Of More Adventurous Jam Band Sounds Would Find Much To Like Here. Paper Mâché Dream Balloon Is About As Straight As King Gizzard Are Ever Likely To Be, And It Still Totally Works Thanks To The High Level Of Song-Craft And Their Innate Weirdness, Which Will Always Come Out No Matter How Hard They May Try To Keep It Under Wraps." Polygondwanaland
Used Import - none
2018 UK limited edition Fuzz Club Records gatefold pressing, on Sea Blue vinyl. Only 100 copies! Half-speed mastered at Abbey Road by Miles Showell. Housed in a heavy-duty gatefold jacket, with round corner card inner sleeve displaying alt-artwork. The inner-fold contains 16-page bound-in booklet with lyrics. "Like the rest of their albums released in 2017, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's fourth album of the year has a gimmick. This time it's not musical, though. The stunt here is that it's the world's first public domain album, given away free by the band and legal to sell by anyone who feels like pressing it up. After an album made with microtonal instruments, a synth prog epic, and a trip-hop jazz collaboration with Mild High Club, Polygondwanaland sounds like a consolidation of everything the band has done up until now, chewed up and spit back put in large and small chunks of psychedelic rock. The first song alone, the ten-minute-long "Crumbling Castle," employs microtonal guitars, layers in synths, sounds like space prog, has laid back jazz interludes and heavy metal breakdowns, and delivers all the trippy punch of their early work. After all the experiments and tricks, it almost sounds like the band is playing it safe, even if the song is a rampaging ball of barely controlled energy. They really aren't, though. Instead, they are delivering a record that plays to their strengths as songwriters and musicians instead of distracting people with some flashy idea. It's straight -- or as straight as possible -- King Gizzard, and at this stage of their career, that's a welcome development. Hearing them incorporate all the different sonic flourishes they've employed in the past in pursuit of good songs and not some higher concept means the album may slip past unnoticed, but it will sound great to anyone not scared off by the lack of theatrics. Tracks like the spookily restrained "Searching," the rampaging "The Fourth Colour," the tribal "The Castle in the Air," or the thrumming title track are the work of a band in full command of their process and results. Their fourth album of 2017 may not be their most exciting of the year, but it is their strongest and shows that King Gizzard don't need any bells and whistles to make a great psychedelic splash."
