Not Surprisingly, It Recalls Fahey's Work In A Number Of Respects: The Synthesis Of Numerous Influences From Blues, Pop, Classical, And Folk Styles, The Weirdly Titled Instrumentals, Even The Tongue-In-Cheek Liner Notes. Kottke's Brand Of Virtuosity, However, Is More Soothing And Easy On The Ear Than Fahey's. It's Far From Sappy, Though, The Rich And Resonant Picking Intimating Some Underlying Restlessness, Like Peaceful Open Fields After A Storm. Establishing Much Of The Territory Kottke Was To Explore Throughout His Career, This Release Was Also One Of His Most Popular, Eventually Selling Over 500,000 Copies.” Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide. more

6- And 12-String Guitar
Used - LP - C-1024
1969 Heavy vinyl original in shrink. With the C1024 catalog number on the spine. An all time audiophile classic. "6- and 12-String Guitar" is an album by American guitarist Leo Kottke, released in 1969 on the Takoma Records label. This debut album is renowned for its intricate fingerpicking style and showcases Kottke's virtuosic guitar skills. The album features a mix of original compositions and traditional pieces, all performed with remarkable precision and emotion. The tracks are characterized by their complex arrangements and Kottke's distinctive playing technique, which includes rapid fingerpicking and unconventional tunings. The album gained critical acclaim for its innovative approach to acoustic guitar music and has influenced countless guitarists. It includes standout tracks like "Vaseline Machine Gun" and "The Driving of the Year Nail," which highlight Kottke's ability to blend folk, blues, and classical elements into a cohesive and compelling sound. The recording quality captures the nuances of Kottke's performance, making "6- and 12-String Guitar" a seminal work in the genre of solo guitar music. Overall, the album remains a touchstone for guitar enthusiasts and a testament to Kottke's enduring talent. more
A Shout Toward Noon
Used - LP - 2007-1-P
1986 Original. Appears Glossy, Unplayed. Features Buell Neidlinger, Cello & Producer. “Though The Opening Cuts Are Typical Leo Kottke Instrumentals -- Bouncy Guitar Pieces With Nods To Jazz, Folk, And Blues -- A Shout Toward Noon Is Dominated By More Moody, Somber Tunes. In Some Cases These Are In Bright Folk Territory -- "Four Four North" Has The Tense, Repetitive Activity Of A Hitchcock Soundtrack And Features Some Unusual Guitar Techniques That Magnify The Sense Suspense. Other Cuts Like "The Ice Field" Have The Meditative, Melancholy Character That Is More Typical Of John Fahey's Later Work. This Isn't To Say That There Are No Bright Moments, Just That The Musical Dynamic Of This Entire Album Is Wider Than Usual. A Shout Toward Noon Is In Fact One Of Kottke's Most Intriguing Albums, One Which Amply Rewards Repeated Listening.” All Music Guide - Richard Foss more

Chewing Pine
New - LP - ST 11446
Sealed 1975 Original. ‘Leo Kottke's Seventh Album Is A Dazzling Amalgam Of Sounds And Styles -- There's A Surprising Emphasis On Vocal Numbers Here, Beginning With "Standing On The Outside" And "Power Failure" (A Procol Harum Number, No Less), That Show Him Off Singing With A Full Band In A Light Country-Ish Vein, Followed By "Venezuela, There You Go," A Loping Instrumental That Incorporates Some Nimble-Textured Slide Guitar To Great Effect In Its Opening Bars. Then It's Back To A Vocal Idiom With A Slow, Powerful, Bluesy Rendition Of Marty Robbins' "Don't You Think," On Which Bill Barber's Piano Shares The Spotlight With Kottke's Singing. Some Of The Rest, Like "Monkey Money," Don't Meld His Guitar And The Band As Well, And As Good As The Robbins Song Is, The Virtues Of This Album Lie In Its Leaner Instrumentals. The Obvious Attempt On Chewing Pine To Sell Kottke As More Of A Mainstream Artist And A Sometime Singer Obviously Didn't Work, As This Closed Out His Contract With Capitol Records (Apart From One Subsequent Compilation). It Also Says Something About How The Artist Himself And His Admirers Feel; Only A Single Track Off Of Chewing Pine, The Shimmering, Fingerpicking Instrumental "The Scarlatti Rip-Off," Earned A Place On His Rhino Anthology. There Are Enough Good Moments, And Even A Few Transcendent Ones, To Justify Owning This Album.” – Bruce Eder, AMG more

Dreams And All That Stuff
New - LP - ST 11335
Sealed 1974 Original, Clean Cut-Out Hole, Custom Sticker On The Shrink Wrap. “Kottke's Sixth Official Album Is A Dazzling Array Of Pieces, Some Wistfully Romantic ("Mona Ray"), Others Savagely Witty ("When Shrimps Learn To Whistle"), And Still Others Downright Folksy ("Bill Cheatham"), With Accompaniments Of Varying Shapes And Types, From Dobro To Synthesizer And Piano. The Shifting Moods Make This Album, Appropriately Enough, A Rather Dreamlike Experience, As Kottke Moves From The Blues-Inflected "Vertical Trees," Through A Jaunty Medley Of "San Antonio Rose"/"America, The Beautiful," Into "Constant Traveller" (Which Opens On A Cascading Guitar Pattern And Shifts To A Slower, More Elegant And Bluesy Mode), Through Rippling Bravura Pieces Like "Taking A Sandwich To A Feast," And Into The Slower And More Lyrical Guitar-Piano Duet, "Hole In The Day." Kottke's Own Tunes Are Reasonably Memorable, Though The Virtuosity Tends To Overshadow The Music Itself At Times.” Bruce Eder, All Music Guide. more

1974 US Original, LA Pressing Housed In An Embossed Front Cover. "This Is A Good Record, Though Not The Leo Kottke Album To Start With, As It Is Not Representative Of His Usual Work -- It's Mostly A Vocal Record, And A Very Country-Flavored Record At That, With Kottke's Baritone, Reminiscent In Some Ways Of Leonard Cohen (And Even Moving Into What One Might Consider Jim Morrison Territory), Serving As The Dominant Instrument On Six Of The Ten Tracks. His Flashy 12-String Playing And Cal Hand's Dobro Do Come To The Fore On "Tilt Billings And The Student Prince." Tom T. Hall And Ron Elliott Of The Beau Brummels Are Among The Songwriters Represented. Among The Intrumentals, "A Good Egg" Is Just The Kind Of Light-fingered, Light-Textured Virtuoso Piece That One Buys A Leo Kottke Album Expecting To Find, And Much Of The Rest Shows Off His Talents In Some Unexpected Directions. The Sound On The One Way Label Cd Reissue Is First Rate As Well." AMG - Bruce Eder. more

This Was Kottke's Capitol Records Debut, And His Solo Instrumental Sound Is Augmented With The Addition Of Studio Sidemen (Bass, Drums, Piano). His Playing Is Superb (No Surprise There) And Full Of Youthful Vigor -- A Fusion Of High-Speed Picking, Brash Slide Work, Funky Folk, Acoustic Rock, And Melodicism. Most Importantly, Mudlark Marked The Debut Of Kottke As A Singer, An Indication That Capitol Was Trying To Shoehorn Him Into The Singer/Songwriter Genre. Kottke Himself Has Made Disparaging Remarks About His Own Vocals, But They Add Personality To His Virtuosic Guitar Chops. His Acoustic 12-String Cover Of "Eight Miles High" Is Particularly Strong At Showing Off The Vocal Richness. On Later Albums, The Vocals Would Become More Mannered; Here Kottke Takes A More Forward Approach -- Belting Out The Melodies With Gusto. Kottke's Sound Was Too Raucous And Unpredictable To Guarantee Commercial Success On A Major Label. Stylistically, Kottke Is All Over The Map (As Usual), Blending Traditional Folk, Bluegrass, Blues, Singer/Songwriter, And Classical Into His Own Brand Of High-Octane Eclecticism. There's No Mistaking The Leo Kottke "Sound," But It's Hard To Label It. Versatility Is Paramount, From The Down-Home High-Speed Picking Of "Cripple Creek" To The Steely Bottleneck Slide Work On "June Bug" To The Baroque Classicism Of "Bourrée" By J.S. Bach, All Of It Wrapped By Kottke's Wry, Surreal Wit. A Landmark Early Album, Mudlark Increased Kottke's Visibility And Helped Establish His Reputation As A Homegrown American Original, Allmusic Jim Esch. more
