Is That All There Is?
Audiophile - Used - PPAN ST386
Pristine 2012 180gm audiophile remastered reissue from Pure Pleasure. Lacquer Cut and mastering at AcousTech Mastering by Kevin Gray & Steve Hoffman. "When Peggy Lee became well-known in the 1940s, swing and jazz-influenced pop dominated the musical landscape. In the 1960s, however, it was a whole new world in popular music. The British Invasion and Motown -- not big bands -- were mainstream, and to the Baby Boomer youths of the 1960s, Lee was part of "our parents' music." But the singer had a major hit with 1969's Is That All There Is?, one of the best-selling albums of her career. While this isn't a rock album per se -- Lee's foundation was still jazz-influenced pop -- it acknowledges pop-rock tastes of the 1960s without being unfaithful to her history. Everything on this LP is a gem, and that includes a moody remake of Lee's 1940s hit "Don't Smoke in Bed" as well as classic arrangements of George Harrison's "Something," Neil Diamond's "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show," Leiber & Stoller's "I'm a Woman," and Randy Newman's "Love Story." The LP's centerpiece, however, is Newman's hit arrangement of Leiber & Stoller's title song, which was covered by P.J. Harvey in the 1990s. Influenced by German cabaret, this half-spoken, half-sung treasure is as hauntingly soulful as it is maudlin. The song's outlook is far from optimistic; essentially, it's saying that we might as well grab our moments of pleasure and enjoyment where we can find them because ultimately, life is nothing more than a meaningless series of disappointments. But there's nothing disappointing about Is That All There Is?, an LP that is most certainly among Lee's finest accomplishments." All Music Guide - Alex Henderson.

Ole A La Lee
Used - LP - ST 4175
Rare 1960 Full Dimensional Stereo Original With Capitol Logo On Side Of Label. Appears Glossy, Unplayed. Small Name Neatly Stamped On The Rear Cover. “Velvety Flutes, Peppy Percussion, Well-Behaved Brass -- Yes, The Stage Is Set Once More For Peggy Lee's Sedately Suggestive Latin Musings. Seemingly Ghost-Written In George Shearing's Ultra-Lounge Hand, This Sequel To The Singer's Latin Ala Lee! Album Offers Another Enchanting Mix Of Jazz-Vocal Staples ("Come Dance With Me," "You Stepped Out Of A Dream") And Broadway-Issue Mambo ("Fantastico," "Non Dimencticar"). Never Fear The Drip-Drip Of Gloss In Extremis, Though, For Lee Always Distinguishes The Cuban-Lite Environs With Her Throaty Ballad Tone And Unerring Rhythmic Sense. Arranger And Conductor Joe Harnell Does Let The Latin Fire Loose A Bit ("From Now On"), But Generally Things Remain On Auto Glide. A Perfect Backdrop For Your Next Tiki-Torch Affair, This Harmless Conga Turn -- While Certainly Not Essential -- Is Sure To Be Eaten Up By All Of Lee's Adoring Fans.” Stephen Cook, AMG.

The Fabulous Peggy Lee
Used - LP - DL 4461
1963 US Mono Original, With Decca Company Inner. Corner Crease And Light Seam Wear. "Rarely Has An Album Been More Appropriately Titled Than The Fabulous Peggy Lee. A Trailblazing Songstress Of The 1940s And '50s, Peggy Lee Was The Rare Woman Writing Her Own Hit Songs In An Era When Most Major Artists Employed Teams Of Songwriters To Write For Them. Lee Was Every Bit The Strong Woman Portrayed In Songs Such As "Fever"; However, As A Versatile Singer Possessed Of Perhaps The Sexiest Vocal Tone Of The Era, Lee Could Change Genres In The Blink Of An Eye. The Fabulous Peggy Lee Does A Fine Job Of Exploring Lee's Softer Side. "A Million Years Too Late/How Long Did You Think I'd Wait?" So Sings The Fabulous Leading Lady On "You Let My Love Get Cold." The Song's Musical Sway Is Led By Her Husband, Former Benny Goodman Guitarist Dave Barbour. The Sweetly Melancholy Ode Is A Misty Rebuff To A Lover Who Waited Too Long To Make A Move. While The Peggy Lee Of "I'm A Woman" Would Spit These Lyrics Out With Unflinching Confidence, On This Track Lee Shows A Softer Side. It's As Though She's Acting Tough As A Front, But Her Voice Has The Slightest Quiver Of Hesitation That Gives Her Broken Heart Away. In This Regard, Lee Is On Par With The Great Frank Sinatra In Her Ability To Inhabit A Song's Lyrical World Completely And Effortlessly. These Same Types Of Nuances Creep Up Throughout The Album, Making What Could Be A Simple Collection Of Ballads Into Something More Powerful. Irving Berlin's "Love You Didn't Do Right By Me" Has The Faintest, Pleading Billie Holiday Undertone. Odd, Disorienting Bird Chirps Populate The Otherwise Lush "Autumn In Rome," While The Orchestrations Are By Turn Sleepily Restrained And Blaringly Spunky, As On The Cole Porter Romp, " "Do I Love You." Of Course, In Lee's Smoldering World, It's No Surprise That Slow-Burners Are Among The Album's Highlights. "The Tavern" Plays Like A Smoky Female Response To Sinatra's Bleary "One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)." "Love Is Sweet/ But For Us It Cannot Be," Sings Lee In A Sparkling Lilt To A Fading Lover (The Backing Strings Ply An Eerie Melody That Seems To Have Drifted In From A Sultry James Bond Score). "The Gypsy With The Fire In His Shoes" Was Penned By Lee And Features An Exotic Melody Accented By Intricate Guitars And Unique Percussion Courtesy Of A Tap-dancing Sammy Davis, Jr. Another Number Penned By Lee, "Johnny Guitar" Is Among The Album's Best-Known Songs. The Theme For The 1954 Joan Crawford/Sterling Hayden Film Of The Same Name, It Again Finds Lee Experimenting With Latin Rhythms And Slipping Into A Somber, Understated Southwestern Air. The Minimal Musical Accompaniment (Mostly Just Dusty Guitar Plucking), Truly Puts Lee's Vocal Prowess On Display. By Being A Brilliant Vocalist, Interpreter And Composer, Lee Easily Earns Her "Fabulous" Title." AMG - Karen E. Graves

Then Was Then And Now Is Now
New - LP - T 2388
Sealed 1965 Stereo Original. "Peggy Lee Is One Of The Very Few Singers To Have Been Fortunate Enough To Make The Transition From The 1940s And '50s Style Of Big-band Jazz And Hit Parade Standards Into The Comparatively Mod Post-british Invasion Pop World. Granted, Lee Wasn't Destined For The Top Of The Charts. However, The 11-song Then Was Then, Now Is Now! (1965) Does Showcase The Artist's Wide And Somewhat Eclectic Interpretive Styles. She Certainly Hasn't Abandoned Her Ability To Belt Out Jazzy Melodies, As Aptly Demonstrated On The Sid Feller-arranged Opener, "Trapped (In The Web Of Love)," Or The Signature Sound Of Billy May's Brassy And Stylish Score During "Leave It To Love." Nor Has Lee Lost Any Of The Appeal That She Infuses Into Her Interpretation Of The Slower-tempo "Losers Weepers," The Title Track "Then Was Then (And Now Is Now)," The Breathy Intimacy Of "(I'm Afraid) The Masquerade Is Over," And The Charming "The Shadow Of Your Smile" (Aka "Love Theme From The Sandpiper"). Yet The Most Consistently Engaging Material Spotlights The Singer In A Hipper Context. The Swinging And Tambourine-shakin' "Free Spirits" Is A Prime Example Of Lee Letting Her Proverbial Hair Down, While She Gets Funky On Her Update Of Willie Dixon's Blues Classic "Seventh Son." All But Standing In A Class By Itself Is The Sensitive Cover Of The Kinks' Ray Davies-penned "I Go To Sleep." Perhaps Not Surprisingly, Those Three Selections All Hail From A Sole July 7, 1965, Feller-led Recording Session." AMG Review By Lindsay Planer
