Motives For Writing
Used Import - TWI 826
Rare 1989 Original. "A More Energetic Collection Of Mertens Pieces, Motives For Writing Is Closer To The Driving Rhythm Work Of Michael Nyman. Piano Is Not The Central Instrument Here -- Most Of Mertens' Compositions Are For A Small Ensemble Of Strings And Winds. "No Testament" And "The Personell Changes" Are Urgent, Strident Works, Whereas "Words On The Page" Is Restless, Seeking Resolution To The Tale It Is Telling. "The Whole" Ends The Album On A Note That Is Victorious And Slightly Bitter. It's An Intriguing, Though Slightly Icy, Album." AMG - Ted Mills.

Whisper Me
Used - LP - WH 1079
1988 Original Pressed On Pure Virgin Vinyl. Gold Promo Stamp On Back. Record Appears Glossy, Unplayed. “One Can Imagine How A Composer Like Wim Mertens Could Appear On The Windham Hill Label And -- To Some People's Surprise -- In The Late '80s He Appeared Twice. Whisper Me Is A Compilation Of Tracks From His Other Crepuscle Releases, A Mini-Overview Of His Style, And A Way Of Hearing Some Tracks From The Then-Impossible-To-Find Maximizing The Audience. Mertens Has More Depth To Him Than Other Pianists On The Label, And A Darkness Creeps In At The Edges Of These Works. Yet His Romanticism Sets Him Apart From Contemporaries Such As Michael Nyman And He's Unafraid To Aim For The Heart Rather Than The Brain. And Another Note: "The Fosse," Looked At Sideways, Bears A Surprising Chord-Progression Resemblance To Cat Stevens' "Wild World."” – Ted Mills, AMG
