Motor Totemist Guild - Infra Dig Infra Dig
Pop New - LP RTLP001 Rotary Totem
Sealed 1984 Private Pressing. “With The Release Of Its First LP, Infra Dig, In 1984, James Grigsby's Motor Totemist Guild Quickly Established Itself As A Creative Force One Should Account For. Infra Dig, Titled For The Infrasound Research Of Luigi Futi In The Early 20th Century, Contained Complex Music That Made Henry Cow Sound Like An Oompah Band. Grigsby Blended Elements Of Contemporary Classical Music, Canterbury Progressive Rock Chops, And A Rock In Opposition-Like Propensity To Deconstruction And Song Pollution. The Album Was Recorded Between 1981 And 1983 With Grigsby, Cellist Becky Heninger, Reed Player Lynn Johnston, And Reed Player/Singer Christine Clements Making Up The Motor Totemist Guild's Core. Drums Were Handled By Guests Nigel Bladen And Thomas Dodge, While Multi-Instrumentalist Eric Strauss, Who Would Later Become A Regular, Helped Out On One Track. Infra Dig Included The Very Strange And Groovy "Aunt Iodine" (With Lyrics Taken From Luigi Futi), The Patchwork Manifesto "The Totem Motorist," And A Very Personal Interpretation Of The '60s Pop Hit "Get Angry," The Band's Most Advanced Foray Ever Into Pop Territory. Grigsby Was Still Sorting Out His Influences And Trying Too Many Things At Once, Something Best Represented By "The Totem Motorist," Which -- As Interesting As It May Be -- Lacks Focused Direction And Good Integration Of Its Many Parts. Still, Infra Dig Already Was A Very Strong Avant-Prog Album And Announced Great Things To Come. The LP Was First Released On Grigsby's Own Rotary Totem Records And Quickly Became A Collector's Item. It Was Never Reissued On Its Own But Found Its Way Onto CD As Part Of The 1996 Set Archive One.” - François Couture, AMG... more details
