Trumpeter Jack Sheldon Has A Few Solos, But The Focus Is Very Much On The Altoist Who Is In Peak Form For This Period. 2023 Craft repress in shrink with hype sticker. "Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section" is a seminal jazz album by alto saxophonist Art Pepper, recorded on January 19, 1957, and released later that year. This album is particularly notable because it features Pepper collaborating with members of the Miles Davis rhythm section, including pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The circumstances surrounding the recording session were unique; Pepper had not played for some time and was reportedly unaware of the session until the last minute. Despite this, the album is celebrated for Pepper's vibrant and emotive playing, as well as the seamless integration with the seasoned rhythm section. The tracklist includes a mix of standards and Pepper's original compositions, showcasing his lyrical and expressive alto saxophone style. Highlights include renditions of "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," "Imagination," and "Waltz Me Blues." The chemistry between Pepper and the rhythm section is palpable, with each musician contributing to the album's dynamic and cohesive sound. "Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section" has been praised for its spontaneity and technical brilliance, earning its place as a classic in the jazz canon. more

Assisted By Pianist Dolo Coker, Bassist Jimmy Bond, And Drummer Frank Butler, Pepper Was Just Starting To Show The Influence Of John Coltrane And Ornette Coleman In His Style, Freeing Up His Playing And Displaying A Greater Intensity During His Improvisations. Ironically, Pepper Sticks To Swinging Standards Such As "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me," "Gone With The Wind," And "I Wished On The Moon" As Points Of Departure On This Interesting And Largely Enjoyable Set. Excluding A 1973 Recording With Mike Vax's Big Band, It Would Be 15 Years Before Art Pepper Led Another Record Date In The Studios.” Scott Yanow, AMG. more

The Trip
New - LP - P 7570
New, Unplayed 1982 Japanese Black & Gold Stereo Label Reissue With Obi. Recorded In 1976. “…..By The Time These Sides Were Made In 1976, Any Residual Coolness Had Been Displaced By Hot Emotionalism And An Almost Manic Intensity. The Lessons Of John Coltrane Had Clearly Been Absorbed, Harmonically And Otherwise; Not Only Was Pepper More Assertive Than Ever, But He Also Took More Chances. Polish Is For Shoes And Fingernails: By The Late '70s Pepper Was Rough, Raw, And Nakedly Vulnerable. Every Solo This Late In His Career Was An Adventure. On This Record The Adventure Is Joined By Ex-Coltrane Drummer Elvin Jones, Who Doesn't Interact With Pepper As Much As One Might Expect, But Nevertheless Puts Down The Hard Grooves The Altoist Needed To Be At His Best. There's A Bit Of A Tentative Cast To Much Of This Record, Almost As If The Musicians Were Not Yet Completely Comfortable With One Another. Pepper's Playing Is First-Rate, However: His Interpretation Of Michel Legrand's Melody, "The Summer Knows," Is By Itself Worth The Price Of The Album. Given That He Would Not Live Many Years Longer After Its Recording, This One Is A Keeper.” Chris Kelsey, AMG. more

Tracks Are: "The Trip," "A Song For Richard," "Sweet Love Of Mine", "Junior Cat", "The Summer Knows" And "Red Car". "The Trip" is a classic jazz album that showcases Art Pepper's incredible talent and creativity as a musician. The album is known for its fast-paced and energetic tracks, as well as its strong improvisational style. Recorded in one day Pepper and his bandmates spent several hours in the studio, recording the entire album in one take.
