Bundles
New Import - SHSP 4044
Sealed 1975 UK Original With Die-Cut Yellow Card Inner Sleeve. Their First Album That Featured Guitarist Allan Holdsworth. “Holdsworth Provided The Band Exactly The Jolt It Required; Contrast Bundles With Seven, The Comparatively Lackluster Final Columbia LP, Which Had The Same Lineup As Bundles Minus The Guitarist. Jenkins Could Be A Rather Mild And Unassertive Reed Player, Leaving It To The Ever Reliable Mike Ratledge's Keyboards To Take Up The Slack. But By The Time Of Bundles, Ratledge Himself Was Beginning To Retreat; He Had Apparently Decided To Mothball His Old Fuzz Organ, Favoring Full-Chord Fills When Comping And Analog Synth For His Solo On "Hazard Profile, Pt. 5." Given Ratledge's Diminishing Role, The Decision To Add Holdsworth To The Band Came None Too Soon. Aside From The Guitarist, Soft Machine's Most Incendiary Player On Bundles Turned Out To Be Drummer Marshall, Powerful On The Straightaway And Atmospheric While Taking Center Stage On "Four Gongs Two Drums." As For The Material Itself, Principal Composer Jenkins -- Who Had Been Gradually Taking Over The Conceptual Reins Since His First Appearance On Six -- Had An Ability To Write Sleek And Streamlined Jazz-Rock That Still Managed To Recall The Band's Past, Particularly In His Penchant For Odd Rhythmic Permutations ("Bundles") And Ethereal, Minimalist-Influenced Keyboard Ostinatos ("The Floating World") That Harked Back To Ratledge's Tape Experimentation On Third.” Dave Lynch, AMG. more

Live At The Proms 1970
New - LP - RECK 5
Sealed Rare US 1988 Original. Made In USA On Rear Cover, Hole Punch. “Initially Recorded For The BBC In August 1970, This Is A Good Document Of The Group In Concert Shortly After The Release Of Third, Stripped Down To The Quartet Of Wyatt, Ratledge, Hopper, And Saxophonist Elton Dean. Most Of The Material Comes From Their Second And Third Albums, And Wyatt, Disappointingly, Barely Sings At All. These Versions Aren't Much Different From The Ones Found On The Official Releases, Though They're Perhaps A Bit More Spontaneous, So This Is Primarily Recommended For Hardcore Fans.” All Music Guide – Richie Unterberger. more

New - LP - CPLP 4500
Sealed 1968 Stereo Original In Heavy-Duty, Die-Cut Gatefold With Working Pinwheel Cover, Tiny COH. “A Wild, Freewheeling, And Ultimately Successful Attempt To Merge Psychedelia With Jazz-Rock, Soft Machine's Debut Ranges Between Lovingly Performed Oblique Pop Songs And Deranged Ensemble Playing From Drummer/Vocalist Robert Wyatt And Organist Mike Ratledge. With Only One Real Break (At The End Of Side One), The Songs Merge Into Each Other -- Not Always Smoothly, But Always With A Sense Of Flair That Rescues Any Potential Miscues. Wyatt Takes Most Of The Vocals, And Proves Himself A Surprisingly Evocative Singer Despite His Lack Of Range. Like Pink Floyd's The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, Volume One Was One Of The Few Over-Ambitious Records Of The Psychedelic Era That Actually Delivered On All Its Incredible Promise.” John Bush, All Music Guide. more

Third
New Import - 66246
Rare sealed 1970 UK 2LP in gatefold. Soft Machine's "Third" is a truly groundbreaking and genre-defying record that showcases the band's incredible musicianship and boundary-pushing approach to jazz fusion. Released in 1970, this album is often cited as a seminal work in the Canterbury scene, a movement that fused jazz, progressive rock, and psychedelia in a totally unique way. At its core, "Third" is a double album that features four extended suites that weave together different styles and moods. From the soaring, frenetic energy of "Facelift" to the haunting beauty of "Moon in June," this record takes listeners on a journey that is equal parts thrilling and introspective. What sets "Third" apart from other records of its time is the way that it seamlessly blends together different musical influences. The band's virtuosic musicianship is on full display, with intricate interplay between the saxophone, organ, and drums creating an immersive and hypnotic sound. Overall, Soft Machine's "Third" was in big part a flint to the avant-garde and jazz fusion fire that was budding in the late 60's. Its impact and inspiration cannot be overstated. more
